Half title, front. Orig. paper wrappers, with printed parchment d.w. Armorial bookplate of Peter Forbes. v.g. Originally published by Chambers in 1820. David Ritchie, 1740-1811, whom Scott met in 1797, was the inspiration for his Black Dwarf character. He was a brushmaker by trade, but was treated with hostility by his neighbours for his diminished stature, and left Edinburgh for a semi-reclusive existence in Peebles.
