Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Marie-Madeleine Franc-Nohain (illustrator). 1st Edition. The Misfortunes of Sophy (Fourth Series). First written by the Comtesse de Segur in the 1850's. Translated from the French by Honor & Edgar Skinner. Illustrated by Marie-Madeleine Franc-Nohain. Published by Williams & Norgate in 1943. A First Edition. Size: 8 1/4 x 11 inches. Page number:78. Written by a Russian Countess these books concern the misadventures of a curious and adventurous Sophy. She does one silly thing after another, with the critical assistance of her cousin Paul who is always trying to show her the right path. In this book she, for example, manages to drown her tortoise that she believes would benefit from taking a bath. The five stories are illustrated with three full page colour plates and several black and white drawings. Condition: Very Good. The boards are rubbed, worn at the edges and corners and somewhat grubby. The binding is cracked at the hinge at the title page and is quite fragile. The spine has been reinforced with brown paper tape which is now a little worn. The end paper and title page is slightly foxed. There are small marks within the text but nothing of significance, the pages being generally clean and un-thumbed. There is no dust jacket.
