Large thick 8vo. viii, 601 pp. Illustrated from paintings and drawings by Latrobe, plates, some in color, color frontispiece portrait of Latrobe; publisher's note concerning the front cover decorations laid in, as issued. Born in Philadelphia, Latrobe (1803-1891) attended West Point, 1818-1821, but left for Baltimore to read law with Robert Goodloe Harper and was admitted to the bar in 1824. He helped found the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in the late 1820s, became an expert in patent law, arguing cases in state and federal supreme courts, published several books, prepared the first map of Liberia for the American Colonization Society, helped found the Maryland Historical Society, serving as president, 1871-1891, and produced a large body of paintings and drawings, many accomplished on his travels around the country. Offset to two leaves from laid in clipping (no longer present), else a fine bright copy. Original gilt-stamped decorated green cloth, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. (9278).
