Shibata Zeshin æ ç"° æ ç . Hana Kurabe - Rokuhen è ±ã ã ã ã å ç . [1875-1890] Edo? Shugyokudo. A small 18 x 12cm orihon with gilt edges. No colophon. 12 images with Zeshin's hanko (ç ) on one page. Lovely florals, in landscape and pictorial settings, done in bright tones. Shibata Zeshin æ ç"° æ ç (1807 - 1891) was an important artist in the Edo and early Meiji period who was well-known as a lacquerer, lacquer painter, book illustrator and ehon artist. He was known for his Rimpa style, here seen in his colorful renditions of blossoms. Published by Shugyokudo between 1875 and 1890 in ten fascicles with 120 prints (twelve prints each) [Information from Richard Kruml of London from his website describing an original painting from the series.] Here the 6th gathering, with its 12 double page prints, is bound in a cloth covered orihon folding album. Zeshin was trained as a lacquer painter and lacquer designer. His works on paper and in objet are much collected. Zeshin was also the teacher of Watanabe Seitei. One seldom sees this work as a whole series of 12. I have never seen a full set of 120, bound or not. Front cover is stained with foxing to title slip. Slight foxing on some pages.

No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. Shibata Zeshin: Large Surimono with Lacquer - Okina, (1875-1890). This is a print issued by Hana Kurabe in Tokyo from 1875 - 1890 and depicts an Okina (Long Life Noh Mask). Its black colour suggests it is of the Kokushikijyo type with a movable jaw. The print is framed under glass with the full desciption affixed to the reverse of the frame. Signature: Zeshin. Seal: Tairyukyo. Inscribed: At the age of 80. Obtained from a catalogue published by Milne Henderson during an exhibition of Prints, Paintings and Lacquer by Shibata Zeshin, 25 July - 9 July (sic) 1976. On the occasion of Zeshin's 80th birthday a great number of friends from various parts of Japan each wrote one haiku. Underneath in Katakana, are the places from which each came, under each haiku is the signature of the person who composed it. The number of haiku (therefore the number of friends) signifies Zeshin's importance. This is one of the prints issued by Hana Kurabae in Tokyo from 1875 - 1890. The Hana Kurabe prints are similar to surimono in their exploitation of just one them in each design and in the extreme skill and lavishness which were spent on the surimono and printing. This print utilises lacquer on the Okina mask and the paper is fine quality hosho paper; the same used on expensive published surimono of the times. Dimensions: Frame: 626mm high x 727mm wide. Visible Print: 375mm high x 540mm wide. Condition: Very good overall - some minor age discoloration. Flattened fold marks (from original folds as issued). Frame: Some minor wear. International shipping: Could be removed from frame for international shipping if required. Extra postage will be payable on this item as will need to be carefully packed within the glass frame.

Shibata Zeshin æ ç"°æ ç , painter. [Large album leaf painting of an oni é ¼]. N.p., n.d. This 19.4 x 30.6cm painting of an oni (é ¼) is tipped on a large oblong album leaf 33.1 x 47.5cm with a paper mat surround. The image is painted on tan silk with a tan and gray floral design border on the top and bottom and a light green abstract pattern border around it. The demon is dressed and lounging on the floor, looking rather disgruntled, with a vessel and implement of some kind next to it and done with Zeshin's characteristic brushwork. Signed and sealed on the right hand side with the artist's hanko (ç ). That said, it lacks provenance and is priced accordingly. Shibata Zeshin æ ç"°æ ç (1807-1891) was an important artist in the Edo and early Meiji period who was well-known as a lacquerer, lacquer painter, book illustrator and ehon artist and considered the greatest lacquerer of his day in Japan. He was known for his skilled brushwork and taught established artist Watanabe Seitei (also ShÅ tei æ ¡è¾ºç äº, 1851-1918). Zeshin was quite prolific and often painted images of oni and bakemono (å ã ç , ghosts). His works have become much sought-after of late. A bit toned, but otherwise clean. Unusual.

No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891) was a nihon-ga (Japanese-style) painter born in Edo (Tokyo). Skilled at traditional nihon-ga painting and the decoration of lacquer crafts (mainly maki-e, lacquer sprinkled with metallic powders), Zeshin also incorporated ukiyo-e techniques in his works, and it is said that Utagawa Kuniyoshi sought to become his student. Zeshin uses quick brush strokes in this work on silk to paint a dynamic rider. Art pieces by Zeshin, who was prolific in his creation of works from paintings to crafts, are in many museums and art galleries around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. One leaf, complete. Mounted on washi paper. Very minor soiling. Overall very good to near fine. 20 x 31.1 cm. Text in Japanese. .

No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. This demon, the onibaba (or kijo), looks like an old lady. Envisioned by Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891), the onibaba is known for hunting lonely travelers. The folklore personnage first appeared in the 13th or 14th century. The legend was turned into a famous Noh play, Kurozuka . The emotionally-charged contrapposto, along with the vivid colours of the demon s haori, was supposedly inspired by the Noh actor s depiction of the role. The shining silver background recalls Shibata s main profession, as master of lacquer miniatures and jewelry. Lavishly handcoloured. 29.9 x 36.2 cm. Shikishi. Enlarged format. Cardboard paper, silver foil, painting, flecked paper back. Red author`s stamp. Signed by Author(s).
