An unusual combined edition with complete text of the 2nd edition of Sidney's Defence of Poetry [Poesy] printed in 1787 (paged v, 144 p. ; 19 cm. ) bound together with the 1718 English language translation by Hayes of Addison's "Dissertation upon Famous Latin Poets." The Hayes text formed the 2nd part of the original Addison volume and retains it's separate 1718 title page and pagination ([25] - 53, and 3 pages of postscript. ) The Addison text lacks his original Latin portion which comprised pages 1 - 23. Bound in early 19th century 1/4 leather and marbled paper boards. Tooled gilt "chain" rules to spine and Sidney volume title in gilt to spine. Attractive circular cut-paper bookplate with monogram H. L. Is mounted to front pastedown. Extensive biographical notes regarding Sidney are penned in a very close and exceptionally neat hand at front pastedown, endpage and verso. Binding snug; contents neat and clean with just a few mild instances of foxing. Margins still generous. Light rub to paper boards at edges and leather at corners. Well preserved copy; attractive and neat. VG.
