No owner name or internal markings. The month/year of publication written to head of cover. Bright, tight and clean. VERY GOOD INDEED. 48pp. Includes bibliographical references. CONTENTS: Cobden's work and writings, by Lord Welby. --The political opinions of Richard Cobden, by Sir Louis Mallet. SCARCE. RICHARD COBDEN (1804-1865) was an English manufacturer and Radical and Liberal statesman, associated with two major free trade campaigns, the Anti-Corn Law League and the Cobden-Chevalier Treaty. As a young man, Cobden was a successful commercial traveller who became co-owner of a highly profitable calico printing factory in Manchester, a city with which he would become strongly identified. However, he soon found himself more engaged in politics, and his travels convinced him of the virtues of free trade (anti-protection) as the key to better international relations. In 1838, he and John Bright founded the Anti-Corn Law League, aimed at abolishing the unpopular Corn Laws, which protected landowners' interests by levying taxes on imported wheat, thus raising the price of bread. As a Member of Parliament from 1841, he fought against opposition from the Peel ministry, and abolition was achieved in 1846. Another free trade initiative was the Cobden-Chevalier Treaty of 1860, promoting closer interdependence between Britain and France. This campaign was conducted in collaboration with John Bright and French economist Michel Chevalier, and succeeded despite Parliament's endemic mistrust of the French. The COBDEN CLUB was a political gentlemen's club in London founded in 1866 for believers in Free Trade doctrine, and named in honour of Richard Cobden, who had died the year before. 8vo. **Reduced shipping on this item. Paper. Zustand: Good. First Edition. An Original Handwritten Letter Signed by Civil Servant Sir Louis Mallet to Lady Maine. Dated 1888. A long letter to Lady Maine passing him on his condolences for the death of her husband and how important he was in his life. Sir Louis Mallet 1823-1890 was a British civil servant who was an advocate of free trade and served on the Council of India. Sir Henry James Sumner Maine 1822-1888, was a British Whig comparative jurist and historian. He is famous for the thesis outlined in his book Ancient Law that law and society developed "from status to contract." According to the thesis, in the ancient world individuals were tightly bound by status to traditional groups, while in the modern one, in which individuals are viewed as autonomous agents, they are free to make contracts and form associations with whomever they choose. Because of this thesis, Maine can be seen as one of the forefathers of modern legal anthropology, legal history and sociology of law. Size is 180mm x 115mm. Condition is good. Light folding crease.
