Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Rare 1833 1st edition copy. The book is overall in good condition with some signs of wear and age. It is generally considered to be the first American book on angling. The covers have some moderate wear with a few light splits to the cloth along the length of the spine. The book has been rebacked at some point in the past, though it retains it's original spine covering & label. There is an old bookplate and name inscription to the front endpapers. The interior is lightly toned from age with foxing through out and some occasional light soiling or grubbiness. Along with that there may be the very occasional page with some kind of other minor imperfection, such as a creased page corner, minor chip or tear, etc. Generally though, it's a good copy. The book measures approximately 7 3/4 inches by 4 3/4 inches and is 399 pages long. It is illustrated with a few in-text wood cuts.

An interesting periodical containing much scientific content of the day. Some articles appear specifically for the periodical, others taken or summarized from other sources. The editor ("conductor") Smith was well educated and had many interests in publishing. "Jerome Van Crowninsfield Smith (July 20, 1800 - August 21, 1879) was an American physician, author and politician, serving as the fourteenth mayor of Boston, Massachusetts from 1854 to 1855. After attending public school in his home town of Conway, New Hampshire, Smith earned a medical degree from Brown University in 1818 and graduated from the medical department of Williams College in 1822. In the following year, he took a position in Pittsfield, Massachusetts as lecturer in anatomy at the newly established Berkshire Medical Institution (later, Berkshire Medical College). In that same year (1823), he became the founding editor of the Boston Medical Intelligencer. After the publication was renamed to the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal in 1828, he continued as editor through 1856. Smith then established his own publication, The Medical World, which he edited from 1856 to 1857.He also edited the short-lived Bowen's Boston News-Letter and City Record (1825-6). In civic affairs, Smith served as quarantine physician for the port of Boston (1826-48), and then ran for mayor of the city in five successive years before being elected in November 1853. . In 1855, during his second term as mayor, Dr. Smith was awarded an honorary degree from Dartmouth College. Smith served on numerous corporate boards, including those of several banks and railroads. He toured Europe and the Near East in 1850-51 and while abroad served as a juror for the American Industrial Exhibition at the London World's Fair. In 1863,he removed to New York City, where he assumed the post of Professor of Anatomy at the New York Medical College and Charity Hospital. During the Civil War, he volunteered to serve with the United States Christian Commission and was stationed with Union forces in New Orleans between October 1863 and August 1865. He was commissioned as lieutenant colonel, 83rd Regiment, U.S. Colored Infantry (Old Organization) and was appointed by General Nathaniel P. Banks to head a commission overseeing sanitation in the city." (wikipedia).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Allen and Ticknor, Boston, 1833, first edition. Illustrated with text figures. 4.5" x 6.75". 400 pp. Bound original green paper covered boards, brown cloth spine and paper spine label, bookplate of the "Franklin Typographical Society and their list of Library Regulations (dated 1847) on the endpaper, darkened endpapers, library stamp neatly erased from the title page, moderate foxing throughout. "The first American book on fishing. Contains descriptions of fresh and salt water fishing. The latter part of the work is devoted to trout and angling.the first to give a detailed description of the fly fishing equipment then in use.very little original material appeared in the book on the subject of flies, all of them having been designed after English or Scotch patterns, and.the method of fishing was exclusively with the wet fly." (Wetzel). The natural history section was disparaged by reviewers, and the importance of the book lies in the second part of the book: "On Trout, interspersed with remarks on the theory and practice of angling" made it the first book on angling of any importance in this country. It contains quite a bit on fly fishing for salmon, trout and sea trout. Bruns says that Dawson's Pleasures Of Angling, 1876, was the first book dedicated to fly fishing in America, but the fishing section of this book is virtually all fly fishing. Very good.
