Er war auch Redakteur und schuf 1841 schuf kurzfristig den eigenständige und politisch radikale Zeitung "Der Eidgenosse von Luzern", der aber bereits 1844 von der Regierung verboten wurde und der Zensur zum Opfer fiel. Für seine Beteiligung an den aufständischen Freischärlerzügen 1844 und 1845 wurde er in einem aufsehenerregenden Prozess zum Tode verurteilt. Durch glückliche Fügung und getragen von einer Sympathiewelle des Volkes konnte Steiger mit Hilfe seiner Bewacher aus dem Kesselturm entfliehen und wurde in Zürich mit Jubel empfangen.
