Vintage portrait photograph of silent film actress Alma Rubens, circa 1920s. Insignia of photographer Albert Witzel from the negative at the bottom corner, along with reference number 5. Rubens was a rising star of the silent film era, appearing in popular releases such as "Humoresque" (1920), "The World and His Wife" (1920), "Find the Woman" (1922), and "The Valley of Silent Men" (1922). The actress' career was ultimately brief and checkered, however, due to her long struggles with heroin addiction, for which she unsuccessfully sought treatment throughout her life. She died at 33, shortly after having been arrested for cocaine possession in 1931. Witzel Studios was founded in 1909 and rapidly rose to success as one of Hollywood's foremost portrait studios and society photographers. Witzel occasionally took on freelance assignments for Fox Studios, work which gradually became less frequent as studios established their own portrait and stills departments. All but one of Witzel's portrait studios were closed following the photographer's death in 1929. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good, with light creasing and edgewear, and two cello tape repairs to the verso.
