Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Condition: Dust Jacket has shelf wear, book is in excellent condition. In The Wild Shores: America's Beginnings, we experience both the triumph and the tragedy of the early settlements. William Bradford, leader of the Pilgrims, wrote of the joy the men and women felt when they reached Cape Cod and "set their feete on the firme and stable earth." But for the Pilgrims, as for so many others, the joy was short-lived: "What could they see but a hideous and desolate wilderness full of wild beats and willd men.and a mighty ocean.to seperate them from all the civill parts of the world." The first settlers endured "starving times" and saw many of their loved ones perish, but still they held on, praying for miracles. By 1763, the English flag flew over all the land east of the Mississippi, except for New Orleans. On the Pacific coast, Spaniards occupied California and the Russians held Alaska. The Spanish sought to spread Christianity among heathen aboriginals; the Russians set out to line their pockets with gold from the sale of precious pelts. But in the end it was hard work, rapidly developing skills, and the richness of the land that made it possible for a diverse people to forge a new nation that grew steadily in power and influence after winning its independence in 1776.
