2009 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1861). SB in three volumes. viii + 318pp; vi +330pp; vi +334 pp. PlatesPublished Price £29.95 The author of this remarkable three-volume memoir, Major Thomas Bunbury (born 1791), was an early Victorian professional soldier and penal administrator who briefly ran the infamous Norfolk Island penal colony in Australia. Bunbury joined the army in 1807, just in time to fight in the Peninsular War. After service in India, he arrived in Australia and was placed in command of Norfolk Island, the colonyâ s second penal settlement. He was confident in his ability to manage the hardened convicts under his command. He wrote that he could not understand why â a villain who has been guilty of every enormity, should feel shame at having his back scratched with the cat-oâ -nine-tails when he felt none for his atrocious crimes.â He also claimed that â if a man is too sick to work he is too sick to eatâ and claimed that the queue at the hospital was halved. Although his punishments were harsh, he replaced hand-hoeing with ploughs, rewarded good behaviour with improved jobs and gave older convicts lighter work. He earned the ire of the soldiers on the island by ordering the destruction of huts built on the small gardens they kept for their own use and for trafficking with the convicts. The soldiers mutinied, a warship was sent to restore peace and Bunbury was recalled in July 1839. This is a book for anyone interested in early Australian history and its convicts.

Cloth. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. Not Stated (illustrator). A very scarce collection of the correspondence Sir Thomas Hanmer, 4th Baronet, with a memoir of his life. A very scarce work, rebound in a cloth binding. Ink inscriptions to pages 448 and 509. Illustrated with a folding plate depicting the pedigree of the Hamner family. Sir Thomas Hanmer, 4th Baronet (1677-1746) was Speaker of the House of Commons of Great Britain from 1714 to 1715. He was the unfortunate subject of much gossip after his second wife eloped with Thomas Hervey. He is, however, best remembered as an early editor of the works of William Shakespeare. This work, compiled by the historian Sir Henry Edward Bunbury, 7th Baronet (1778-1860), contains a brief biography of Hamner, his correspondence, an extract from his account of France in 1648, miscellaneous correspondence, a memoir of Charles Lee and poetry by H. F. R. Soame. Rebound in a cloth binding. Externally in excellent condition. The date to the spine label is incorrect. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are mostly bright with the odd spot throughout. Very Good Indeed. book.

"Esteemed on Account of its Humorous Plates by Rowlandson" Rare In the Original Printed Boards [ROWLANDSON, Thomas, engraver]. QUISEM, Caleb (pseud.). The Annals of Sporting. London: Thomas Tegg, 1809. First edition. Twelvemo (6 3/4 x 4 in; 171 x 105 mm). [10], 104 pp., untrimmed. Hand-colored fold-out frontispiece engraved by Thomas Rowlandson after Henry Bunbury, hand-colored vignette title of a rider falling from Pegasus, and twenty-seven hand-colored etched plates including folding frontispiece) by Thomas Rowlandson after H. Bunbury,George Moutard Woodward, and possibly others. Publisher's original printed boards, expertly and almost invisibly rebacked with the original spine laid down. A superb copy, rare in the original printed boards. Housed in a fleece-lined black pebbled-cloth drop-back box. The plates include: "The Bucephalus Riding Academy for grown Gentlemen" (frontispiece); "How to Vault from the Saddle;" "The True Method of sitting on a Horse Mathematically Delineated;" "How a Man may Shoot his own Wig;" "The Maid of Mim;" "Costume of Hogs Norton" (two plates); "Game Wigs" (two plates); "Hounds" (two plates); "Mathematical Horsemanship" (six plates); "Fashionable Furniture at Hogs Norton" (two plates); and "The Bailiffs Hunt" (eight plates). Commonly rebound, the book is rather rare in the publisher's boards (original price 10s. 6d). The identity of "Caleb Quizem" has yet to be determined; he appears to have written only one other book, Economy: a Pindaric Tale in Three Parts (1811). "First edition of a coloured-plate Sporting-book, which is esteemed on account of its humorous plates by Rowlandson. Written in the form of 16 letters to, and answers by Mr. C. Quizem, Spelt Quisem on wrap [and boards]" (Schwerdt). Not found in Abbey, Tooley, nor, surprisingly, Siltzer. Schwerdt II, pp. 119-120 (rebound). Grego, Rowlandson the Caricaturist, p. 178. Falk, p. 216. Grolier, Rowlandson, 63.

With Twenty-Nine Hand Colored Etched Plates by Thomas Rowlandson ROWLANDSON, Thomas, illustrator. [BUNBURY, Henry]. GAMBADO, Geoffrey. An Academy for Grown Horsemen Containing the completest instructions for Walking, Trotting, Canering, Galloping, Stumbling, and Tumbling. [and] The Annals of Horsemanship: Containing Accounts of Accidental Experiments and Experimental Accidents, both successful and unsuccessful; Communicated by various Correspondents to the author. London: Printed for Vernor, Hood, and Sharpe, 1808. First edition, first issue with the Hand-Colored Rowlandson plates. Small octavo (6 5/8 x 4 inches; 169 x 102 mm.). [iv], xvi, 28; xvi, 69, [1, directions to the binder], [2, advertisements], pp. Twenty-nine hand colored etched plated by Thomas Rowlandson, including two frontispieces. Bound ca. 1900 by Rivière & Son (stamp-signed on front turn-in) in full polished tan calf, covers with double gilt rules, spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled in compartments, two green morocco gilt lettering labels, gilt board edges and turn-ins, top edge gilt, others uncut, dark blue coated end-papers. Expertly and almost invisibly rebacked with the original spine laid-down. A near fine copy, the plates bright and fresh. According to ABPC it would appear that the last copy of this book to appear at auction was at Swann Galleries, NY, in 1979. "Gambado is said to have been Francis Grose, compiler of A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue" (Riely, John C. Horace Walpole and â the Second Hogarth', in Eighteenth Century Studies, Vol. 9, No. 1, Autumn, 1975). In addition to his works on antiquities, satiric essays, and volumes on non-standard words and meanings, Francis Grose (1731-1791) wrote Rules for Drawing Caricaturas: with an Essay on Comic Painting (1788); "though only an indifferent draughtsman, he mixed with professional and amateur artists, and exhibited at the Society of Artists in 1767-8 and at the Royal Academy in the nine years following" (Oxford Online DNB) - the frontispiece portrait of "Gambado" in The Academy, unsigned (all other signed Bunbury), bears an uncanny resemblance to Grose: a "stocky, corpulent figure which Grose himself caricatured (DNB)," perhaps here.
