Erstausgabe
Contemporary calf, with red leather labels, gilt edge decoration, 8vo, clxxx, 141.+ 320 pp, ills Attractively printed by William Bulmer -his first work for Dibdin. The text leaves something to be desired- as Lister comments "Dibdin announced on his title page that he was presenting the public with a new edition of Robinson's translation as printed by Abraham Vele in 1551 whereas he actually reproduced Alsop's edition of 1639 which in his Introduction (p.clxxiii) he had condemned as "one of the most careless and erroneous extant." He did so because it was easier to print from. (Vele's text was set in black letter.) " Dibdin's chief contribution was his 180 pages of introduction and a vast array of Dibdinesque footnotes. Jackson 12; Windle & Pippin A 9a. Extremities rubbed with slight powdering to joints, bindings firm and sound, minor marks and scuffs to covers and one or two minor marks to contents, contents generally clean but with a little scattered foxing principally to endpapers and frontispieces. An attractive set.
