Leather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). A smart copy of Silas Told's scarce account of his tumultuous life, spent aboard slaving voyages in his youth, and as a prison chaplain in his later years. Scarce in all contemporary editions, Silas Told's autobiographical work was first published posthumously, in 1785.Retaining the original half title, and with the frontispiece, captioned 'Silas Told attending Mr Brownrigg to the place of execution' bound in to the rear.A former owner's pen and ink illustration of this same scene, captioned 'Wm Hogarth 1747' - though not in Hogarth's hand - is bound in after the preface.Silas Told was born in Bristol in 1711, attending Colston's school as a charity pupil. At the age of fourteen, Silas was apprenticed on board a slaver's ship. Falling ill on the voyage, he was abandoned in Jamaica, and suffered repeated beatings and abuse. He was handed over to the notorious slave captain, Timothy Tucker, and suffered further cruelties. Able to read and write, unlike most of his contemporaries, he kept a record of the voyage, and upon returning to England became a Methodist preacher. He ended his days as a chaplain to prisoners who were condemned to hang at Newgate Prison in London. This work, recounting his life experiences, was published by his Methodist friends after his death, as they wanted to spread the story of Told"s conversion to the religion, and use it to show the cruelties of the slave trade. Rebacked in morocco, retaining original calf boards. Endpapers renewed. Small handwritten title label to spine. Externally, excellent. Internally, firmly bound. Pages significantly age toned, with spotting throughout, most concentrated to first and last few leaves. With a former owner's illustration bound in following the preface. Very Good. book.
