Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Time Reading Program Special Edition. Trade Paperback in Very Good Condition. Clean and bright cover, a whisper of wear to extremities, tight & solid, square, pages very clean, no markings, no creasing. Mencken was quite influential in the early part of the 20th century but he went out of fashion in the 1930s; he could not stand up to the new tide that glorified the common man, even though that sprang in part from depths containing a Meckenian contempt for the common man. The mass defection of the Menckian cult into the arms of the New Deal was a most significant irony of 20th century American life. It left hanging the question of what Mencken had really been up to, Whether he had been a baffoon or a philospoher, and where he fitted into the intellectual, social, and political history of this most critical time. This particular book--and do not expect a 'defense of women' because this it most decidedly is not- the Mencken of 1918 caught the women question right at the beginning of a wave of change, so be prepared! 172 pages. 5.25 x 8 inches. 1963, Time, Inc. New York, New York, USA.

Light Blue Cloth Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good to Very Good. First Edition. 1965. First edition. xxviii, 217pp. Critical foreword by Yvor Winters. Frederick Goddard Tuckerman (1821-1873) was an American poet, remembered mostly for his sonnet series. Apart from the 1860 publication of his book Poems, which included approximately two-fifths of his lifetime sonnet output and other poetic works in a variety of forms, the remainder of his poetry was published posthumously in the 20th century. This complete collection of his poetical works has been edited with an introduction by N. Scott Momaday, with a critical foreword by Yvor Winters. The book is bound in the original light blue cloth covered boards with green titling on the spine and a green illustration of a plant on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with noticeable fading to the spine and lighter fading along the top 1 3/4" and 1 1/4" of the fore edge of both boards. The spine ends and top corners are lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with the name Richard Kell written on the front free endpaper. We believe this to be Richard Alexander Kell (1927-2023), the Irish poet, composer and teacher, and many of the pages of the poems have his neatly written pencil notes and lining on the margins. The endpapers are slightly browned on the margins. The clipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with light soiling and the spine and top and fore edges are noticeably browned. The spine ends are bumped and nicked and up to about 3/4" is missing from along the top front and rear edges. There is a tear of about 1/2" on the top front edge and another tear of 1/2" on the front spine edge below a missing piece.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Brown cloth blindstamped with design and ruled border on front panel, gilt lettering to spine. First American trade edition of this title which was bound up from sheets from the 1863 English Smith & Elder edition. This copy, clean and unmarked, apparently unread, with only a hint of wear to the spine ends, is about near fine. With the errata slip, not present in the 1863 or 1869 editions, thus making this the superior text of Tuckerman's poems.
