XX [Information from the dust jacket blurb]: When asked about himself Donald Weismann (1914-2007) said he was born at 788 Island Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In that town full of Rhenish architecture he claims to have said ja before he said yes, and that after learning to say yes, he's said it almost to the exclusion of no. He remembers his first heroine as Laura La Plante as he saw her in the movie, LAND OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN. His father, an erstwhile motorcycle racer, pugilist, magician, juggler, acrobat and genius with old-style numbers, brought home young Weismann's first live array of heroes, heroes like Stanislaus Zbysco the World's Champion heavyweight wrestler, Thurston the magician, Paavo Nurmi the ?Flying Finn," a man called ?Soapy" who could spit tacks into the wall to form the outline of the United States of America, and a man called Paganini Burns who played The Rosary on a violin?with one hand. Weismann added that between heroes there were packs of terribly fine dogs that followed his father home. [Biography] Donald L. Weismann attended the University of Wisconsin (B.S., Ph.M.), University of Minnesota, Harvard University (Carnegie Fine Arts Scholarship) and Ohio State University (PhD). After teaching art in Wauwatosa and Sheboygan, Wisconsin high schools, he taught art history at Illinois State Normal University, North Texas State University, Wayne State University, the University of Kentucky where he was Professor of Art and head of the Department of Art, and at The University of Texas, first as Chairman of the Department of Art, and since 1964 as University Professor in the Arts. He is also Chairman of the Program in Arts and Letters. During 1961-1962 he was a special consultant to the U.S. Information Service in Florence, Italy. He has published scholarly articles, stories, and poems in the New Republic, Art Journal, Midwest Review, University Review, Texas Quarterly, The Christian Scholar and others. A book, Language and Visual Form, is due from the University of Texas Press in 1966. Dr. Weismann's work in painting and collage has been exhibited in the principal galleries of the U.S. and has been nationally circulated by the American Federation of Arts. His work has won various prizes and awards in regional and national exhibitions. He is married to the former Elizabeth Wilder. They have two teen-aged children, Anne and Christopher.

Photograph. B&w photo, expertly posed and expertly shot, taken on the occasion of "the first graduation on the campus of the new Laney College" which is in Oakland, brother city to San Francisco. the 9x7 graphic has a 3/4 inch margin all around, one corner-tip is torn away, the others are bent. Verso of this original has, taped onto it with old masking tape, a print-out with Laney College contact info, a taped-on b&w reproduction of a smaller photo showing subject and three colleagues, plus a few professional notes in pencil and ink, and some grime. A good copy of a good portrait in good condition.

Zustand: Good +. One photograph, measuring about 5.5" x 4", tipped onto a mount with a 2-inch border. Photograph is evenly dust-soiled, but still rather clean. Mount has several chips, including a crack along the bottom edge which may break off at some point. The image depicts a group of eleven uniformed workers and a few boys, one of whom is also in uniform. With at least one pocketwatch present, and judging by the look of their hats and bowties, we suppose these are railroad workers, though thery do not seem to be posed at a train station. A carriage with a large wooden wheel (mostly occluded by the gents) is posed in the background.

Zustand: Good. One photograph, measuring about 8" x 6", tipped onto a mount with a two-inch border. The photograph is evenly dust-soiled, but reasonably clean and well-preserved. The mount has two large corner chips and shows general even dust-soiling. Overall in good condition only. The photograph depicts a large extended family, or possibly a whole town, dressed mostly in dark, conservative clothing, with the eldest group seated in the front. A number of the men have beards with no mustaches, suggesting that this may be a Mennonite community. There are three flags festooned on the porch of the house in the background, while one gentleman waves a much larger flag; perhaps this was a Fourth of July celebration? Judging from the collection from which this photograph emerged, the location is almost certainly Ohio.

Zustand: Very good. One photograph, whose image measures just shy of 9.5" x 6", with white borders that stretch to 10" x 8.5". Corner crease, affectin the border but not the image, and the print is somewhat curled. Otherwise, the image is bright and clean, with no markings. Very nice image of this military aircraft produced by the Great Lakes Aircraft Company; one of the last biplanes. Posing in front of the aircraft are seventeen men, some in dirty workclothes, others in suits and ties; each of whom probably played a key role in designing and building the plane. A nice visual document of Cleveland aviation history.

Zustand: Very good-. One photograph, measuring about 7" x 5", tipped onto a mount with a 1.5-inch border. The photograph is evenly dust-soiled, with a faint smudge in the middle, otherwise clean, and the mount is mildly edgeworn, with the corners rounded. Overall about very good. The image depicts a dry goods store, packed to the gills with fountain pens, cigars, a self-administered "eye test," a number of tonics and serums, etc. One middle-aged man and a younger woman pose in the center of the small store. The place is not indicated, but this emerged from a collection of mostly Ohio photography.

Stiff wraps. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Dust Jacket. Illustrated by Unknown Photographer (illustrator). Front cover: Very faint diagonal marks from rubbing. Very light, short wave adjacent to spine. Back cover: Darkened, 1" square sticker ghost and slight, 1/4" marred spot. ; Old Faithful Geyser reproduces images from a roll of color photo film found by Pascale Georiev's father in 1991 or 1992 at Yellowstone National Park. The film was developed approximately 23 years later to reveal the scenes that captured the attention of an unknown photographer. This FIRST COPY of the edition of 300 is stamped 001/300 at the tail of the inside back cover. From a description by Georgiev: "Drawn from a series of corroded vernacular photographs discovered by curator Pascale Georgiev, Old Faithful acknowledges the reoccurring instances that author patterns of life, personas, and memories. Featuring 17 kaleidoscopic photographs of Yellowstone National Park's Old Faithful Geyser, captured in the early 1990's on 110mm film, these were developed wholly unaltered by Georgiev with autumn of 2015." The deterioration of the color qualities of the film produced images that have a predominant tine of orange, red, blue, etc., varying from picture to picture. They appear to be tinted in processing, but they were not. Pascale Georgiev, FRSA, is an editor & curator currently based between Los Angeles and Montreal. Her works include vernacular photography books, art monographs, photo and written essays, and commercial publications. Capucine Labarthe is a Berlin-based Art Director and Graphic Designer. Both women currently have leadership roles in The Cultural Research Institute, a consultancy for ethnographic research and resulting branding, marketing, and business strategy. In laid, stiff, green cardstock wraps with "Old Faithful" embossed in a large serif font. Sewn saddle stich from head to tail, likely bound by the printer Milk. Printed on fine, cream paper. Unpaginated, 27 pages including the colophon. No place of publication stated, but assumed to be California. This book is, in effect, an accidental artist's book. The degraded color film lends a surreal tint to photos akin to thousands of tourist snapshots. This is a desirable first copy of the edition, absolutely clean, with sharp corners, and Near Fine.; Color Photographs; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; [3]xvii[4] pages Limited/Numbered Edition; First Printing.
