Covers have slightly bumped corners and some edge wear. Small chip measuring 3/4" x 1/8" at top edge of front cover. A Very Good copy. Autobiographical account of pioneer John C. Van Gundy (1846-1929). Van Gundy recollects many events from his early days on the Kansas plains including the tragic murder of his sister Sarah at the hands of Freestate marauders, who wanted to drive away proslavery settlers by terrorizing and raiding settlements, and the relations between Indigenous Peoples and settlers. Van Gundy also writes about the local political climate in the years leading up to the Civil War. Excerpt from the Preface: "To the knowledge of the writer, in the vicinity where he has lived for seventy years, not one of the old pioneers of 1855 and 1856 have given their own written account of the early struggles in what is now Lyon County, Kansas.".
