All 20 plates plus tinted title page present. Block still well bound together from title page to end, frontispiece loose. Interior in nice clean condition apart from minor very occasional age spotting. No names or inscriptions. 2 title pages, 1st is Adam & Co of London and Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 2nd is Haslam of Nottingham, neither dated but believed to be about 1870/80s, soon after his death in 1873. Mary, Leicester, Prize, Frederick Knight, H.V. Broughton, Vicar, Christmas 1889'. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart, with slight bumping and fading to the head and tail of spine as well as to the corners. Prize bookplate to the front pastedown, and slight offsetting to the front and rear free-endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages contain the odd spot or handling mark, as well as a small stain to the gutter on page 31, but otherwise pages bright and clean. Very Good. book.

Livingstone's decision to publish the travelogue with John Murray was seen as an unconventional choice, but it quickly became a bestseller. This text is said to include field science alongside 'exceptionally sympathetic descriptions of African people'.David Livingstone was a famous British physician, explorer, and Christian missionary. He spent much of his life trying to solve an 'age-old mystery' about the Nile River that would bring him the fame to end the African Slave Trade.
