Hardcover. Small 4to. Yellow cloth with gilt spine lettering and black, red, white, blue and gilt pictorial emblem on front board. 435pp, 2pp ads. Top edge gilt. Frontispieces, numerous illustrations and full-page plates. Very good. Text block is tight and fine, with binding showing mild edgewear and bit of rubbing. A tight and decent first edition of this hefty tome with an unusual blend of travel and art -- chapters such as "Through the Caucasus," "Palatial Petersburg," "Holy Moscow," "The Kremlin and Russian Art," "Modern Russian Art" and "Russian Bronzes." De Vogue (1848-1910), who penned the first two chapters, was a French polymath -- diplomat, literary critic, travel writer, archaeologist and more. Child (1846-92) penned the next five chapters and Cook (1828-1900) the eighth, with the closing ninth chapter by Russia's famed war artist Vereshchagin (1842-1904).

Hardcover. Zustand: Good+. Revised Edition. 1888. Signed by Publisher Thomas E. Kirby on blank page with Presentation notation, with date (1888). Autobiographical sketches. Illustrated with drawings by Verestchagin. Original bright red cloth and gold lettering, floral endpapers. 'Verestchagin' in Cyrillic printed in gold on both boards. Moderate general wear. Red binding cloth lightly soiled, spine faded, spine ends frayed. Front free endpaper is loose and chipped. Thomas E. Kirby (1846-1924), with his partners James F. Sutton and R. Austin Robertson, founded the American Art Association (AAA) in NYC in 1883, one of the premier art auction houses of its time (American Art galleries, 6 East 23rd St.). Known for his 'million dollar voice,' Kirby conducted the sales himself, and is credited with creating the style of modern art auctions, instituting an atmosphere of elegance and style, and enforcing standards in order to counteract the negative reputation held by auctioneers of the day. Publication of this autobiographical work coincides with the exhibition of the works of Vassili Verestchagin at the American Art Galleries in 1888. 196 pages. Vasily Vasilyevich Vereshchagin (Russian: 1842-1904) was one of the most famous Russian battle painters and one of the first Russian artists to be widely recognized abroad. The graphic nature of his realist scenes led many of them to never be printed or exhibited. 'As it would take too long to give a complete account of all my travels and experiences, I have selected certain characteristic episodes here and there and put them together in a book of sketches.' contents: Central Asia: 1. Samarcand; Russo-Turkish War: 2. On the Danube; 3. The passage of the Balkans; 4. The march on Adrianople - Strukoff; 5. M.D. Skobeleff; 6. S. Turgenieff. RBR7.

Erstausgabe
Soft cover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 12mo, original thick buff fold-over wrappers, with "Vassili Verestchagin" printed in gilt on upper cover, 75pp. text much of it showing line drawn illustrations of these works in the exhibition + 2 plates in halftone; 14pp., blank leaf, leaf of illustrations in line; 35pp. These three are here bound in reverse order. In his day, the artist was as well known for his topical Russian paintings as he was for his important documentary photography. The exhibition itself was mounted under the auspices of the America Art Association, and, in Chicago, the Inter-State Industrial Exposition, the accompanying text material apparently written by the artist himself, who provides glosses on his individual works. The three separate items included here are not often found together. A good+ copy.
