Based on the Gandhian model of Basic Education, it proposed schooling for rural children with half a day devoted to training in the parents' traditional craft. Dubbed as the 'Kula Kalvi Thittam' ('casteist education scheme') by its detractors, Periyar's Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) and C.N. Annadurai's Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and even elements within the ruling Congress party, the scheme ignited a political storm. While eminent experts from across the country were roped in to assess the scheme, there were massive protests in Tamil Nadu against it. Within a year the Rajaji government fell and his tenure in the seat of political power ended. The controversy led to a process of de-Brahminization of the Congress party in Tamil Nadu culminating in the rise of K. Kamaraj who transitioned from a provincial to national 'kingmaker'. In this short book based on a rich variety of sources, D. Veeraraghavan provides a perspicacious narrative combined with an astute analysis of the social and political processes underlying the controversy. Of interest to students of education, caste, and nationalism, it is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the political history of modern Tamil Nadu.…

In 1921, when Bharati died in poverty, his widow sold his works to his half-brother. But in the wake of the music boom launched by gramophone records and the rise of the talkies, Bharati's songs became commercially valuable. A powerful movie mogul, A.V. Meiyappan, bought the rights to Bharati's works and when someone else used a Bharati song in his film, Meiyappan sued him. A controversy followed and there was a popular agitation demanding the nationalization of a writer's work. After a series of legal wrangles, the poet's writings were nationalized and put into the public domain in 1949. In this book, A.R. Venkatachalapathy tells the fascinating story of this unique and dramatic episode, tackling its most challenging question: who does an artist belong to.…

Ruled for half a century by two regional parties DMK and AIADMK its politics has been marked by language pride, non-Brahmin movement, caste-based reservation, regionalism, welfare populism, and cinema. Despite the negative coverage it tends to get from outside, Tamilnadu is a developed state scoring high on all human development indicators. In Tamil Characters, noted historian A. R. Venkatachalapathy provides a ringside view of contemporary Tamilnadu beginning with an assessment of political figures such as Periyar and Anna, Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa, and significant poets, writers and thinkers including Subramania Bharati and Iyotheethos Pandithar. The final section discusses contentious issues such as language politics, prohibition, jallikattu and Dalit rights.…
