Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Estonian language. Octavo 15 x 22 cm. Weight 290 gr. Wrappers, 178 pp. The Book is in Near Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Fore-edge of front cover is slightly frayed, soft creases across cover corners; internally few occasional fingerprints, otherwise fine. Collection of folk tales from author's home region Võrumaa in South Estonia is considered his most outstanding work. Current, the first selection of tales was published in 1924, fifteen Eduard Viiralt's gorgeous grotesque expressionist linocuts compliment the stories. The second selection published in 1933 was illustrated by Paul Liivak. Stories narrative lead the reader into thick forests of Võrumaa, where writer creates fantastic world of the ghosts and devils, also to the Cossack village of the Tsarist era, to the Livonian and Russo-Turkish Wars, and even to Sweden Sigtuna. Such captivating and enchanting stories are created by author in contrast to the realist writings about farmers everyday life, which depicted most of the authors of the time. Author Juhan Jaik (1899 1948) wrote fantasy stories and poems for both adults and children. The best of his stories rely on folk tradition, local history, legends and Christian mythology of his native Võrumaa. In them, in a mild humorous vein peculiar to him, writer colourfully describes the lives of people, both rich and poor, in Southern Estonia in the first half of the 20th century. It is impossible to imagine the literary culture of Võrumaa without Jaik's creation. His imaginative, exciting writings fascinate Estonian people till the present. Eduard Wiiralt (1898 1954) is considered as the most remarkable master of Estonian graphic art in the first half of his century. Wiiralt s art always includes a play of symbols, wicked exhaustion, apocalyptic apparitions, a battle with sensuality and a concession thereto, inspiration, and imagination. With his unique and easily recognisable style, which could be characterized as grotesque and surrealism, artist has acquired recognition both at home and abroad.

Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Estonian language. Octavo 13 x 18 cm. Weight 170 g. Wrappers, 103 [1] pp. The book is in Near Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Cover corners are slightly worn, restored upper left corner of back cover (minor piece was broken off), closed tear to the upper left edge of front cover along the spine (about 9 cm long), occasional minor rubbing on front cover, few light foxing spots and fingerprints on the back cover; internally finely preserved. Valmar Adams (1899-1993) (wrote under the pseudonyms Vilmar Adams) was a poet, prosaist, editor, literary scholar and researcher of Russian literature and Russian-Estonian literary relationships. In 1924 he entered with aplomb Estonia's literary scene from the Russian poetry parnassus with present debut verses collection, which had created a furore. Given his interest in Russian literature, it is unsurprising that one of Adams primary poetic influences seen here was Russian modernist poetry - pretentious intellectual urban verses with excessive mannerism and spiritual provocations. He concentrated on the internal, subjective I, focusing on feelings of loneliness and romantic yearnings. His verse structure was multifaceted, as were the innovations of his rhyme and experiments in melodic instrumentation. With current verses collection he brought a near rhyme into Estonian poetry, which theoretical justification was presented in his thesis "Riim" (Rhyme, 1925). Thesis declared that using of perfect rhyme had ceased to be an art, and promoted an imperfect rhyme, because it had became consistent with the passage of time. Such statement as well as other author's literary activities caused scandal and critics. Another scandal associated with current poetry book arose because of its dedication "G. S. - Teie mehelisele võluvusele", which was addressed to poet Gustav Suits and "his masculine charm". Several critics interpreted this phrase as Adams' statement about his homosexuality. Book's amazing modernist cover design is Wiiralt's debut work in the field of book graphics, who, according to his bibliographer, also was not detected in relationships with women. Eduard Wiiralt (1898 1954) the most famous Estonian graphic artist with unique and easily recognisable style, which could be characterized as combination of grotesque and surrealism.
