Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Illustrated stiff card covers with blue cloth on spine. Covers show creases; front cracked, but intact; corner chip on rear cover. Gift inscription dated 1889 on a blank verso. Last leaf is worn along fore edge. Fourteen illustrations on rectos only, lithographed by Geo. S. Harris & Sons, Philadelphia. 14 ff. Oblong, 7 x 10.5 inches. Placed in an archival mylar sleeve. Promotional picture album published in 1889 by the Durham, North Carolina, tobacco company, W. Duke, Sons & Company. Each illustration features a handful of vignettes (of which a number are overtly racist) which usually depict persons casting shadows that look like animals, or occasionally presenting some ironic juxtaposition. Many of these illustrations were featured on their cigarette cards. The rear cover states ''Compliments of W. Duke Sons & Co.'' and advertises ''The Six Great Brands of Cigarettes - Duke's Cameo, Turkish Cross-Cut, Duke, Cross-Cut, Duke's Preferred Stock, Duke's Best.'' The company was founded by Washington Duke (1820-1905), a veteran of the Confederate navy who began manufacturing tobacco products on his homestead after the war, set up a factory in Durham in 1874, and began producing cigarettes in 1879. For his philanthropy, Duke University was named in his honor.

Twenty-two one-sided chromolithograph leaves. Oblong octavo. Cloth-backed color pictorial wrappers. Most of front wrapper lacking. Internally clean. Good. Fine chromolithographs of well-known actors, actresses, and socialites in exotic costumes, including Sarah Bernhardt in an "Old Russian Costume." "To produce such a volume has naturally necessitated an enormous outlay; but the demand for our cigarettes has so increased, day by day, month by month, that we can best thank our patrons for their continued kindness by offering the present album" - Preface. An attractive example of chromolithography reaching its zenith as popular art. McGRATH, p.191.

Richmond: c.1890. Oblong 8vo. 3 chromolithographic albums in 1, with a total of 18 bright, colorful pages of cigarette cards but without four full-page prints mentioned in other sets. § A wonderful collection of colorful cigarette cards produced for the Duke Co. The images are too good to be true; especially the final section of fancy dress ball costumes with women dressed as fruits and vegetables or household goods. Original stiff wrappers, moderately worn, but generally very good condition with one chip out of the from back wrapper and two very small chips from front wrapper. 13 bright chromolithographic plates, each with 2 or 4 reproduced cigarette cards. The cards depict a state or territory's governor, its coat of arms, and a nautical flag. Opposite these plates are a small map and thumbnail text sketch of the state or territory.
