Buch
Zustand: Gut. 120 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Dust jacket a bit rubbed and bumped, slightly light-margined, 1st block from adhesive binding loosened, but coherent, otherwise a good and clean copy. - Envy is much discussed today, and ancient Greece offers us a well-documented account of this emotion at work in a relatively advanced society. To understand the Greeks, we must see them as they were, and as they readily agreed they were, persons displaying the full range of human emotions without inhibition or pretence. Time and time again the ancient Greeks explained behaviour in terms of envy. Man, they claimed, was naturally envious, and envy they accepted as a fact of life. This book examines how the anthropomorphic gods of the Greeks led to the concept of divine envy, the ways in which both the Athenian and the Spartan constitutions allowed for the prevalence of envy among their citizens, popular belief in the evil eye, and the solutions to the problems posed by envy offered by philosophy and religion. The author uses comparative material about the Greek peasant today as well as a wide variety of ancient sources for this study of one of the most powerful of all human feelings. - Peter Walcot, a graduate of London and Yale Universities, has taught Classics since 1957 at University College, Cardiff, being appointed to a chair of Classics in 1973. Editor of the journal "Greece & Rome" and an active member of various professional and educational bodies, the author has been particularly associated with the development of courses for students whose primary interest lies in English, History, Biblical and Religious Studies and Philosophy His earlier books are "Hesiod and the Near East" (1960), "Greek Peasants" (1970) and "Greek Drama in its Theatrical and Social Context" (1976). Leather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). A scarce collection of the poetry of satirist John Walcot, bound from the parts and published between 1790 and 1792. Containing A Commiserating Epistle to James Lowther, Earl of Lonsdale; Odes to Mr Paine, Author or Rights of Man; More Money! Or, Odes of Instruction to Mr Pitt; Odes of Importance; The Tears of St. Margaret; A Pair of Lyrical Epistles to Lord Macartney and his Ship; The Lousiad; and A Poetical, Serious and Possibly Impertinent Epistle to the Pope, In 1780, Wolcot went to London and commenced writing satires. The first objects of his attentions were the members of the Royal Academy, and these attempts being well received, he soon began to fly at higher game, the King and Queen being the most frequent marks for his satirical shafts. In 1786 appeared The Lousiad, a Heroi-Comic Poem, taking its name from a legend that a louse had once appeared on the King's dinner plate. Other objects of his attack were Boswell, the biographer of Samuel Johnson, James Bruce, the Abyssinian traveller, Hannah More, former bluestocking and playwright, and Bishop Porteus. Wolcot, who wrote under the nom-de-plume of "Peter Pindar", had a remarkable vein of humour and wit, which, while intensely comic to persons not involved, stung its subjects to the quick. He had likewise strong intelligence, and a power of coining effective phrases. In other kinds of composition, as in some ballads which he wrote, an unexpected touch of gentleness and even tenderness appears. The title page has been rebacked. Rebound in red calf binding. Externally smart, though some marks to the boards. Internally, fimly bound. Some closed tears to the pages, in places affecting the text, which have been repaired with tape. Pages have some scattered light spotting throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD with a good only interior. Very Good. book.
