General information on education, economy, internal improvement, topography, population, county boundaries, &c. Includes the Constitution of the State of Missouri, established on the 12th of June, 1820. The publication date of this "gazetteer" (1837) falls between the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and the KansasÐNebraska Act of 1857, two federal statutes that jointly led to American Civil War. Good, front hinge mildly cracked. Map with six inch tear close to margin and subsequently detached from block. Cloth faded and worn; two drop stains on front cover. One signature slightly sprung.

Original publisher's purple cloth, printed paper label on the spine (rebacked preserving the original backstrip at an early date, but front hinge loose). Provenance: Autograph document signed by Alphonso Wetmore dated June 1845 loosely inserted; with the ownership inscription of Martin Palmer dated [18]89 on the rear paste-down, and the ownership inscription of Judge Walter B. Douglas, dated St. Louis 1900 on the front paste-down. First edition. With contributions from about well-known locals in each county, including merchants, political representatives, fur traders, clergymen, and "Mr. Robinson, pilot on the Missouri". Major contributors are William P. Campbell, and General Henry Atkinson (1782-1842) who served in the area from 1819 as commander of the Ninth Military Department and later as peace commissioner to the Indians. In 1825 he supervised the construction of Jefferson Barracks, the first army infantry school, where he married and settled. contributing the a general view of the . "Of particular interest . . . is the short sketch entitled 'The Pawnee Sacrifice' describing a vain attempt by a party of whites to rescue a woman captive of the Pawnees" (Wagner-Camp 69).
