Binding and hinges are strong. Not ex-lib copy. 299 pp including index. A very well cared for Burn's classic. You won't be disappointed. Size: 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall.

Slight FOXING/slight BLOTCHING throughout some pages of volume. Rebound with original ornately impressed gilt decorated (but dulled/lightly rubbed) front board & spine & plain impressed decorated rear set onto new binding with darkened beige cloth showing to hinges & ends of spine which have losses to original binding. Heavy wear to corners or new binding with frays exposing card of underlayer, wear through to card at bottom edges in places. Ink presentation inscription dated 1856 to free end-paper. Gilt to all page-edges. Outstanding b/w illustrations within text. Slight blotching to a good percentage of pages, but text is otherwise nice & clean. Binding a little strained in places. Well used.

Includes one of Ford Madox Brown's rare illustrations for Byron's Prisoner of Chillon [Goldman - Victorian Illustrated Books 1850-1870, p. 82]. In blue cloth binding over bevelled boards, richly decorated with gold leaf, design by by John Sliegh, whose initials appear as part of the design at the base of spine. All edges gilt. xvi, 400pp. An important volume in this history of English book illustration [See Gleeson White, English Illustration, --105-107.] (Boards worn, rubbed at edges, a little frayed at spine tips, still attractive volume). Previous owner's bookplate on front paste down, gift inscription dated 1866 on front free endpaper, with small bookseller's ticket indicating the volume was once retailed by Napper and Wright Stationers and Booksellers on New Street, Birmingham. Small ticket on rear paste down indicating the volume was bound by leading binders, Edmonds & Remnants, London. Pencil note on title page. Some spotting around gutters but otherwise neat, clean, bright and tight internally. Large 8vo. A large and heavy volume which will likely incur an additional charge for overseas delivery.

Bookplate of the Earl of Portsmouth affixed to front endpaper. A striking example.
