In den WarenkorbBlack Boards. Zustand: Poor. No Jacket. J. A. Paine (illustrator). Fifth Edition. Edge and corner wear; scuffed and scratched; corners are bumped and rubbed; shelf worn; spine is split with the front and rear boards separated as a result; interior foldout pages are split and detached in several places, but still complete; some chipping of the pages at the corners and edges; overall still a marvelous rare copy! Black boards quarterbound by leather (with faded, bumped and bruised leather corners as well) with gilt and black lettering on the front board. Very very rare and hard-to-find title! One of twenty seven thousand! "The author is fully aware of the difficulties and uncertainties of any system of Chronology extant. After mature deliberation and advice, it is deemed prudent and better to base this work upon the accepted system of 'Archbishop Usher,' upon which a large majority of all our histories and chronological dates are founded. To disturb this system would produce great confusion, with no good results, as the general outlines of history and the relation of one period to another, can be as correctly obtained upon this system, as upon any other, and hinders no one from extending the stream of time back, to suit the chronology of the Septuagint; the claims of the Vedas and Puranas of India; or the fabulous uncertainties of Chinese tradition." In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Leather. Double Elefant Folio. Published by A. H. Walker, London and Paris , and printed in the United States by Strobridge & Co, lithographers of Cincinnati, OH. 1878. The book features a unique fold-out historical timeline' measuring 28" x 13 1/4". It comprises 21 lacqurered chromolithograph panels, linen-backed, conjoined to make a single panorama of 27 x 260 in Third Edition. Bound in 3/4 leather boards with titles present to the spine and front board. Boards have shelf-wear present to the extremities (boards are scuffed and worn to the extremities). No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. It is a gigantic panoramic diagram which charts the history of the world from a Biblical perspective, starting with the creation of Adam in 4004 B. C. And ending in 1881. It measures some 27 inches high and 260 inches long. But as the Key states it is not necessary to open it fully, unless one wants It is fondly hoped, that all friends of education and knowledge, will duly appreciate the years of toil and study, spent in arranging, from the fragmentary and disconnected records of the worlds history, this instructive and beautiful panorama. Its plan is simple, its utility obvious, and its value, as you estimate knowledge. A chronological chart of Ancient, Modern, and Biblical History, Synchronized by Sebastian C. Adams, Salem, Oregon. Adams' chart is so rich in detail and information that it is all but impossible to give it full credit in a written description. Every double-page "embraces the contemperaneous history of 600 years". Adams centres his chart on the "Stream of Time" which is divided into decades and centuries. Initially he simply follows the Biblical history, but eventually he segues into the historical period with the development of Egyptian, Persian, and Greek culture. He notes all important events and offers historical and biblical commentary where appropriate - often illustrating historical monuments and Biblical events and monstrosities. Eventually the map gets necessarily more and more complicated as it passes into the classical era, the pre-modern era, and ultimately the modern times. At the end of the chart Adams shows the currently reigning world rulers, discusses the development of the United States , and even offers a breakdown of historically important technological developments. The Key is unpaginated and undated, though it appears contemporary with the Panorama. Adams' explanation of his Panorama is preceded by several pages of reviews of the Panorama, and extensive lists of mainly European sovereigns, heads of state, commercial institutions etc, who are in possession of a copy. The amazing panorama was drawn by Sebastian C. Adams of Salem , Oregon (1825 - 1898) who was an American school teacher and surveyor active in Oregon and California in the mid to late 19th century. Adams was born in Sandusky , Ohio and lived for a time in Galesburg , Illinois before attending Knox College . In college he found that he had a gift for teaching and abandoned his academic career to become a private tutor and school teacher. He travelled to California via the Oregon Trail and survived to take a land grant in Yamhill Country , Oregon. He later worked as a surveyor, a preacher, and as Oregon State Senator. In 1871 he published his Illustrated Panorama of History , this remarkable document that attempts to synchronize Biblical history with global historic elements. The chart was a great success and has proven his greatest legacy. Adams died in 1898.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
