The name of the character is taken from the name of an English and Scottish country dance from the 17th century, which is also referenced, inter alia, in a short story, "The Bedford-Row Conspiracy", by Thackeray.

He was also a member of the fictitious Spectator Club, and the de Coverley writings included entertaining vignettes of early 18th-century English life that were often considered The Spectator's best feature.
