This play was also the basis for an operatic adaptation by Riccardo Zandonai in 1914. Si forma inizialmente a Bologna all'Accademia di Belle Arti e una volta ottenuto il diploma, nel 1892 si trasferisce a Roma. Qui conosce il poeta Nino Costa fondatore del cenacolo In arte libert…as che proponeva un rinnovamento dell'arte attraverso la riscoperta dei grandi del Quattrocento sull'esempio dei Preraffaelliti. De Carolis inizia così a frequentare questo gruppo e diventa membro dell'associazione, iniziando a realizzare dipinti di impronta preraffaellita. Nel 1900 conosce Giovanni Pascoli per il quale disegna ed esegue un pomo in argento e la targhetta per il bastone, dono degli amici del Marzocco e inizia ad occuparsi della decorazione grafica di alcune sue pubblicazioni. L'incontro con il poeta si rivela importante nella produzione artistica tra il 1892 e il 1928, perché le opere di questo periodo che trattano paesaggi agresti e marini rimandano all'intonazione pascoliana. Nel 1901 lascia Roma per Firenze, dove insegna ornato all'Accademia di Belle Arti dedicandosi alla xilografia. Questa tecnica sarà a lui molto cara e primo in Italia, realizzerà xilografie a più colori e illustrazioni per varie riviste e per le opere di D'Annunzio, del quale è amico. Questa stampa è tratta dalla serie dedicata alla vita di mare composta da sei fogli. Un soggetto molto sentito dall'artista per il quale realizzò non solo diversi schizzi, ma anche molte fotografie ritraendo il lavoro dei pescatori a San Benedetto. In questo foglio vengono rappresentate attraverso un inchiostrazione omogenea in verde e giallo, utilizzando anche il colore bianco della carta, diverse donne alla foce del fiume. Queste, descritte nei loro abiti panneggiati attraverso i giochi chiaroscurali e resi morbidi in modo da seguire i movimenti dei corpi, sono riprese come in un fermo immagine al lavoro. In primo piano sulla sinistra c'è una donna, in posa stante, con il volto spigoloso e austero che tiene le mani alzate verso il capo per sorreggere una cesta o dei panni. Alle sue spalle altre donne vengono rappresentate chine, stanno raccogliendo o prendendo qualcosa da terra, altre in piedi danno le spalle allo spettatore per osservare degli uomini che tirano con gran fatica la corda per portare una nave in secca. Oltre nel paesaggio della foce si vede una fila di alberi con le vele piegate. In basso a destra è rappresentata un'ancora con la sigla dell'artista "ADK". Impressione eccellente su carta avorio liscia. Ottimo stato di conservazione. Ampi margini oltre la battuta del rame. Oltre l'immagine a matita nel margine inferiore a sinistra "La Foce" e a destra "A. de Carolis". Un altro esemplare è conservato a Montefiore dell'Asso ed uno presso la Provincia di Ascoli Piceno (inv. n 725); è nota anche una versione pittorica con lo stesso titolo. La matrice originale, unica tavoletta incisa recto e verso è conservata alla Calcografia Nazionale di Roma (inv. n. 3518).
