This is a promotional booklet that emphatically supports the League of Nations and the policies of Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) who was one of the main architects of the League. Extracts from comments made by Wilson and other contributors are printed herein. Editor Adon A. Yoder also adds his own commentary and expresses support for Wilson and his political platform and policies. For example, Yoder says that the United States' recent isolationism is dishonorable and says that the League is not an "entangling alliance." The main purpose of this pamphlet is to promote the League of Nations. There are many dedicatory sections of text to honor Wilson and other notable historical figures who are affiliated with and supported the League. Criticism is leveled at one of Wilson's opponents, Henry Cabot Lodge, the latter of whom was supportive of the United States' involvement in World War I. Overall, this pamphlet describes the League as being beneficial and a much better choice than going to war. The following is as sampling of the features in this booklet: "Dedication to Woodrow Wilson," "The League of Nations" [poem] by Alfred Tennyson, "Woodrow Wilson" [poem], "The Spirit of Woodrow Wilson" by Yoder, "We Must Redeem Ourselves," "[Theodore] Roosevelt for League in 1914," "Most Prominent Republicans Want League." Interspersed among the text are black-and-white portrait illustrations of David Lloyd George, Premier Orlando of Italy, Clemenceau of France, William Howard Taft, and Charles Evans Hughes.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is an outspoken critique of the liquor industry's arguments in favor of the saloon in Lynchburg, Virginia in the lead-up to a local referendum on prohibition that took place in December 1908. The author, a local minister and prohibition advocate, is highly critical of the saloo…n system and employs the inflammatory, direct, and radical style of early 20th-century temperance writing. The text includes specific rebuttals to claims made by pro-liquor advocates in the campaign, along with a range of historical, ethical, and social arguments in favor of prohibition. The book is a valuable glimpse into the powerful temperance movement that swept the United States in the early 20th century, and the extent to which it relied on shame, hyperbole, and fear-mongering. Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book exposes the corruption that was prevalent in Richmond, Virginia at the turn of the 20th century, particularly as it related to alcohol and its role in politics and everyday life. Despite being over a century old, the author's condemnation of the evils of alcohol remain as relev…ant as ever, and the book offers a stark portrayal of the devastating social effects of alcohol abuse. The author was outspoken in their criticism of the political machine that was in control of Richmond at the time, and their writings show a clear understanding of the ways in which alcohol was used to corrupt politicians and manipulate elections. An important historical document that provides insight into the history of alcohol prohibition in the United States, the book is also notable for its insightful commentary on the broader social and political issues of the day, which remain relevant in many ways to this day. Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book transports readers to the heart of early 20th-century America, offering a unique glimpse into the vibrant, yet often troubled, social and political landscape of Lynchburg, Virginia. The author, a self-proclaimed ââ Å"rebelââ  and champion of the common man, takes aim at the…cityââ â¢s power structures, exposing a web of corruption, political maneuvering, and social injustice. Through a series of scathing editorials, poignant poetry, and humorous anecdotes, the author lays bare the hypocrisy of local politicians, the unchecked influence of corporations, and the plight of the marginalized. He rails against the suppression of the truth by the cityââ â¢s newspapers, which he accuses of serving the interests of the wealthy and powerful rather than those of the people. The bookââ â¢s powerful critique of unchecked power and its call for greater transparency and social justice resonate with the eraââ â¢s progressive ideals, and continue to offer valuable insights into the complexities of power dynamics and the pursuit of a more equitable society. In den WarenkorbOriginal Wrappers. Zustand: Good binding. THE IDEA, edited by Richmond's muckraking socialist writer, Adon Yoder, quite uncommon, and consisting of "Sermonettes Published Weekly for The Common Good". Yoder indeed raked the muck of Richmond, taking on the saloons, the red-light districts, the police, and the City Fathers. No one…was safe from his caustic pen, and he agitated plenty, ultimately ending up in jail for his efforts.~From Christian's History of Richmond: "Adon A. Yoder came to the city and began the publication of a weekly pamphlet called THE IDEA. He wielded a caustic pen, and began a criticism o many of the city officials, charging them with the responsibility of abuses that existed in the city. Several bought suit against Yoder and his publisher and obtained a judgment. He was also charged with libel, and not being able to prove his statements, he was convicted and punished. With the exception of reconstruction, this is the second time a writer has been sent to jail in Richmond." (p. 521). See Harry Kollatz' RICHMOND AND RAGTIME, for extensive recounting of some of Yoder's exploits in the fair City of Richmond in the early years of the last century. This copy creased from being folding in half, and reinforced with paper tape at the spine. Good binding.
