Los trabajos sistemáticos en el yacimiento han documentado una secuencia temporal que abarca desde finales del siglo VI a los inicios del X, cuya materialidad es compleja. Al igual que ocurrió con otros materiales, los registros numismáticos necesitaron desde los primeros momentos una contextualización estratigráfica. En El Tolmo, numismática y arqueología han ido siempre de la mano y la secuencia estratigráfica ha sido el eje fundamental que sostiene el análisis de los registros materiales de todo tipo, registros que se entrelazan entre sí interconectándose en una fructífera relación. El gran volumen de monedas tardorromanas de los siglos III y IV d.C. exhumadas en un ámbito espacial de adscripción visigoda o islámica nos llevó desde un principio a poner la mirada en los contextos estratigráficos para poder entender la dinámica monetaria de esta ciudad altomedieval. Es la posición estratigráfica la que permite ponderar el valor cronológico de estas monedas datando su momento de uso, a la vez que informa sobre el tiempo que se mantuvieron en circulación. Las monedas estudiadas en este volumen, recuperadas y estudiadas en el marco del proyecto de investigación Tolmo de Minateda, han perdido en gran parte su papel como indicadores cronológicos, sin embargo, permiten abordar otras cuestiones de gran interés histórico. Su análisis ha hecho posible dilucidar algunos interrogantes sobre aspectos históricos y económicos de la Alta Edad Media que surgen del conocimiento histórico del área de estudio y su aplicación en el caso concreto de este yacimiento. La estratigrafía y la georreferenciación espacial de los registros numismáticos, analizados en base a su contexto estratigráfico, han proporcionado información relevante sobre los ámbitos y momentos de uso a la vez que contribuyen, junto con el resto de los materiales con los que se relacionan, a comprender mejor el yacimiento y su dinámica monetaria, poniendo de manifiesto el grado de monetización de esta ciudad altomedieval en la que un numerario diverso, dominado por los viejos bronces tardorromanos y la moneda altomedieval, circuló de manera conjunta en un mismo momento, en un mismo lugar y en un mismo espacio socioeconómico.
