James Alexander, was the soldier-explorer who led an 1836 expedition, sponsored by the Government and the Royal Geographical Society, into the interior of South West Africa (todayâs Namibia). Travelling by ox-wagons, his route lay north from Cape Town, across the Orange River into the interior and, running dangerously short of water, out at Walfisch Bay - a 4,000-mile trek through unexplored desert wilderness. His book is a compendium of early exploration, including observations of flora and fauna, and the native peoples in the area they travelled through. He also amassed a large collection of zoological and scientific specimens.

Bower begins by stating that he is sending 'a Copy of a Letter which I have received from Dr Carm Smyth [James Carmichael Smyth (1742-1821) of the Middlesex Hospital]'. Smyth's son (the future Sir James Carmichael-Smyth) is 'a very fine handsome young man Lieut in the Engineers come out a Passanger [sic] in the same ship with us'. Bower and Smyth 'wisely went into the Boat which was lashed to the Stern Gallery to fish sharks which were following the ship - the Boat suddenly canted round in the slings, upon which poor Smyth went plump into the sea'. Bower 'happened to catch hold of the Boat & by the dictate of instinct & fear together, scrambled up again & got into the Stern Gallery'. The slings being 'foul', an attempt to lower the boat failed, and 'poor Smyth was nearly exhausted when I jumpt from the great Cabin window & kept him up till we were both Pickt up'. Bower continues: 'I will thank you to tell his Dad that I think myself well rewarded for my Ducking by the satisfaction I derive from his Letter'. Dr Smyth has sent Bower 'a very fine field Glass', and Bower asks his father to 'tell Sandy to call on Dr Smyth if he goes to London, he is a man of considerable eminence in his profession'. The doctor has 'exerted himself on my account for my promotion in the Army', and 'if he can serve either Graham or Sandy' Bower will think himself 'Greatly overpaid'. The Gentleman's Magazine of February 1800, pp.181-182, gives an unusually long entry on Captain Bower's death, at 'the isle of Perrim, on the Red Sea', praising his character and accomplishments.

First edition, 2 volumes, 8vo, xxxii, 308; xii, 327, [i] pp., folding engraved map, 14 plates (3 hand-coloured aquatints) including a sheet of music, wood engraved illustrations in text, contemporary half calf gilt, morocco labels, marbled sides and edges, a very good set. Having served with the East India Company, Alexander (1803-1885) was aide-de-camp to Colonel Kinneir, British envoy to Persia, and was present with the Persian army during the war of 1826 with Russia, receiving the Persian order of the Lion and Sun. On 26 October 1827 he was gazetted to the 16th Lancers. He went to the Balkans during the Russo-Turkish War of 1829, and received the Turkish order of the Crescent. In later life, he saved Cleopatra's Needle from destruction, and had much to do with its transfer to England in 1877. Abbey (Travel), 229; Prideaux 325.

On both sides of a piece of vellum roughly 21 x 15.5 cm. An unusual survival, aged and discoloured in the fashion customary with vellum. On the front is a design of an armorial shield encircled in draperies, in ink and colours (blue, red, yellow), beneath which are the words 'Burgess Ticket | for | Captain Kennedy 1 Regt Royal Lanarkshire Local Militia | 1813'. On the reverse, all in the hand of the signatory: 'At Hamilton the thirteenth day of July one thousand eight hundred and thirteen | The which day in presence of William Hamilton and John Torrance Esqrs Baillies of the Burgh of Hamilton with Consent of the remaining Members of the Town Councill thereof Captain James Kennedy 1st Regt Royal Lanarkshire Local Militia was duly admitted Burgess of said Burgh with Liberty to him to Enjoy the whole Priviledges and Immunities thereto belonging as amply in all respoects as any Burgess does, or can Enjoy who accepted thereof and Gave his Oath de fideli | Extracted by | A Hamilton Clk'.
