Alibert was a prodigious writer, his best known work being the beautifully illustrated Descriptions des maladies de la peau. His literary work also included biographies of famed scientists such as Lazzaro Spallanzani and Luigi Galvani. In 1806, he was the first to describe a patient with mycosis fungoides.[4] The disease was formerly referred to as "Alibert-Bazin syndrome", named in conjunction with dermatologist Pierre-Antoine-Ernest Bazin. In 1801 he was appointed médecin adjoint to the Hôpital Saint-Louis (then known as the Hospice du Nord), where he administered to patients with skin disorders, syphilis and leprosy. Following the Restoration of the French monarchy, Alibert became a personal physician to Louis XVIII. Later he was a personal physician to Charles X, and was awarded with the title of "baron". Being that there was no chair of dermatology in Paris, Alibert was appointed professor of materia medica and therapeutics in 1823. Alibert believed that when diagnosing skin disorders several criteria needed to be used, and attempted to introduce a classification system for diseases that was similar to the method Bernard and Antoine Laurent de Jussieu used in botany. Alibert first classified dermatological disorders according to outer appearance, then he divided them into what he called families, genera and species. This system of classification was represented pictorially by Alibert as the "Tree of Dermatoses". " Herman Goodmann Jean Louis Marie Alibert (1768-1837) studied for the priesthood with intentions of becoming a teacher. However, this career was ended by the Revolution when all religious orders were disbanded. Influenced by friends in Paris, Alibert turned to the study of medicine and completed his degree with a highly acclaimed thesis on pernicious intermittent fevers. Soon after graduation he was appointed to the staff of the Hôpital St. Louis where his brilliant work brought the hospital to preeminence in the treatment of skin diseases and earned him an historic role as the founder of French dermatology; first ordinary physician of King Charles X. He made important contributions with his descriptions of lupus vulgaris, keloid, dermatolysis, mycosis fungoides, and cutaneous leishmaniasis. Among the terms he coined that remain in use today are: dermatolysis, syphilid, keloid, and dermatosis. Dieses berühmteste und umfangreichste Werk von Baron Jean Louis Alibert (1768-1837) bringt auf seinen 63 luxuriös ausgestatteten Farbtafeln eine umfassende Beschreibung der Hautkrankheiten. Das kostbare Werk ist mit einmalig schönen Bildnissen geschmückt, das Handcolorit ist zart und zurückhaltend. Durch die Beifügung der Accessoires des täglichen Lebens wurde den Abbildungen eine nie wieder erreichte Realistik verliehen. Das Charakteristische der Effloreszenzen ist auf jedem Quadratzentimeter eines Blattes minutiös herausgearbeitet. Quasi als Frontispiz enthält der Atlas erstmals den berühmten "farbigen" Baum der Dermatosen, dessen entfaltetes Geäst die Systematik der Hautkrankheiten symbolisiert. Der Text ist klar gegliedert. Das "Hôpital St.Louis", im Norden von Paris, wurde 1607 von König Henri IV gegründet. Es war zunächst ein Pesthaus, ab 1791 wurde es ein allgemeines Krankenhaus. Alibert gelang 1800 der Institution einen großen Namen zu verschaffen. Aus der Arbeit mit der Vielzahl chronisch Kranker konnte Alibert seine immense klinische Erfahrung gewinnen. Sein Unterricht war beispielhaft und er gilt als der Erstbeschreiber des Keloids, der Mycosis fungoides, der Akromegalie, sowie der Sklerodermie. Die Tafelwerke brachten ihm großes Ansehen und Ehre ein. Nach der Restauration erhielt er noch den Leibarztposten bei Ludwig XVIII. Der Verkaufspreis war 640 Franken, eine exorbitante Summe, wenn man das Jahresgehalt von Alibert ("Médicin en chef") mit 2000 Franken oder das eines chirurgischen Medizinalassistenten ("Elève en chirurgie") mit 500 Franken als Vergleichsmaß nimmt. Welcher Jünger Äskulaps würde heute 14 Monatsgehälter für ein wissenschaftliches Werk ausgeben? Dennoch war der Preis für dieses erstklassige Werk nicht zu hoch. Der Verleger Barrois, dessen Tochter Alibert geheiratet hatte, ließ es in Folioformat ausschließlich mit bunten Tafeln drucken. Hierdurch wuchsen die Kosten so sehr, daß auch die Mitgift von 100 000 Franken dabei draufging. Übrigens mußte Alibert die Summe nach dem frühen Tode der Ehefrau peu à peu zurückzahlen. Die Abbildungswerke waren für die Krankenabbildungen eine einmalige Pioniertat. Alibert erreichte ohne Vorbilder formal und inhaltlich ein so hohes Niveau, daß der Aufschwung nur mit jenen der anatomischen Abbildungen von VESAL verglichen werden kann. Mit Hilfe seiner Ikonographien hat Alibert in wunderbar anschaulicher Weise das Gebiet der Dermatologie abgehandelt. "Am Beginn der Krankenbildentwicklung des 19. Jahrhunderts steht Alibert."
