Doch nicht allein, dass auf ihn der Begriff des Happenings zurückzuführen ist - er prägte diese Kunstform Ende der 1950er Jahre in New York; auch seine Environments - riesige, wandelbare Installationen etwa aus Autoreifen, Fässern oder Eisblöcken - gelten als Marksteine der jüngeren Kunstgeschichte. Indes begann Allan Kaprow seine künstlerische Karriere als Maler, nicht zuletzt im Zusammenhang seines Studiums bei Hans Hofmann; zudem studierte er Kunstgeschichte bei Meyer Shapiro und Komposition bei John Cage, zeigte sich also früh nicht nur der Theorie, sondern auch verschiedensten künstlerischen und weltinterpretativen Ansätzen gegenüber offen. Dabei bewegte er sich stets im Spannungsfeld von Intuition, offener Form und Zeitbezug auf der einen und der reflexiven Praxis als Theoretiker und Kunsthistoriker auf der anderen Seite. Die Ausstellung in der Esslinger Villa Merkel widmet sich erstmals ausschließlich dem zwischen 1946 und 1957 entstandenen malerischen Frühwerk und lässt die Vorbilder erkennen, an denen sich der junge Künstler orientierte und abarbeitete, wobei insbesondere sein Interesse an Fragen des Raums wie auch sein Bestreben, die Leistungen eines Jackson Pollock und eines John Cage miteinander kurzzuschließen, ins Auge stechen. Das reicht hin bis zu den Mitte der 1950er Jahre entstandenen Arbeiten, die er »Actioncollagen« nannte und in die er nach und nach Alltags-materialien und -gegenstände miteinbezog.
