A catalog published on the occasion of an exhibition of the same name. The show featured the work of two African-American artists, Hale Woodruff (1900-1980) and Nancy Elizabeth Prophet (1890-1960). Woodruff specialized in painting while Prophet was a sculptor. Both taught at Spelman College, a historically black, women's liberal arts college. Spelman College was founded in 1881 in Atlanta and is still open to this day. It is the oldest private, historically black (HBCU), liberal arts college for women. Excerpt from front flap: "_Hale Woodruff, Nancy Elizabeth Prophet and the Academy_ brings Woodruff's and Prophet's lives and work into a critical dialog for the first time. This volume highlights recently conserved works in Spelman College's collection, features more than fifty paintings and works on paper by Woodruff and, for the first time, presents all extant sculptures by Prophet. Highlighting what these artists were able to accomplish in Atlanta, _Hale Woodruff, Nancy Elizabeth Prophet and the Academy_ positions Woodruff and Prophet as institution builders who challenged and transformed the academy for African Americans.".
