Andoyer, L'oeuvre scientifique de Laplace (Paris, 1922), a modernized précis that is useful at this level. It is unfair to this unpretentious little (162-page) work to quote here the comment with which the editor of L'action nationale prefaced an excerpt from its methodological section (n. s. 18 [Jan.-June 1922], 14-21), but the remark deserves rescue from the oblivion of that journal: À l'heure où l'esprit de snobisme et d'aventure, qui semble être la marque de notre temps, croit découvrir dans les théories, peu accessibles mais tapageuses, du mathématicien allemand Einstein, un je ne sais quel nouveau point de départ pour la pensée, une voie insoupçonnée pour la recherche scientifique, il est bon de rappeler l'effort aussi innovateur que parfaitement intelligible de notre Laplace, dont la grande hardiesse s'accompagnait d'une égale modestie" (Ivor Grattan-Guinness in his 130-page D.S.B. article, XV: 401).
