2pp., 4to. 23 lines. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged paper, with the two pages of text on the two sides of the first leaf, and the address on the reverse of the second leaf, which has minor damage due to removal from mount, and carries two postmarks, and a broken red wax seal, with address by Curwen, to 'The Revd. Andrew Reed D.D. | Cambridge Heath | Hackney.' The first two paragraphs read: 'My dear Sir, | The Committee of our Missionary Society beg that I will intreat you to come to Frome at our next Anniversary, which shall be fixed to meet your convenience in an week of August or September. | We want you to preach on the Sabbath and to remain with us over the public meeting on Monday Evening.' Curwen has experienced Reed's 'paternal kindness', and knows his 'love to the Cause of our glorious Saviour in Heathen Lands'. He 'cannot receive "no", for your answer'. A postscript states that October would serve, if August or September proved impracticable.

Both Sylvester's letter and the copy of the letter by Starmer to which it is replying are in good condition, on lightly-aged paper, each with punch holes to one margin. Starmer, who at the time of writiing was proprietor of a large group of newspapers, had begun his career on the 'Northern Echo'; he had for many years been a Liberal member of parliament, standing down in 1931 due to ill health. Cober Hill Guest House was at that time an early experiment in what would become the children's home or retreat. For clarity's sake this description begins with the copy of Starmer's letter: 1p., 4to. 17 lines. 'The Guest House is about 15 miles from Whitby and you pass it on the way to Scarborough. | Last Saturday, Prince George was at the Guest House and was very much interested in what is being done. This is only the beginning of an effort of this kind so far as the "Northern Echo" is concerned.' He would like to be present if Lloyd George visits, and asks Sylvester to let 'Miss Andrews, the general manager, know. If it is a sudden visit, I suggest you should telephone Cober Hill and let Miss Andrews know, so that she can have the children on view. Otherwise, they might be on the sands or taken into Scarborough for the day.' Sylvester's letter: 1p., 4to. 17 lines. Addressed to Starmer at the Westminster Press Ltd, The Newspaper House, Fleet Street. It is not possible to give 'a definite answer' regarding the planned visit. 'The situation is this. Mr. Lloyd George must return to London on the 1 p.m. train by Tuesday. He is due to speak in good time that morning, but he does not know how long the discussion will last.' He thinks it would be best for him to telephone 'to Miss Andrews'. He apologises for the short notice: 'it will not give you an opportunity of being there personally, which I am sure Mr. Lloyd George would have liked.'.

Brown was educated at the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. He was for thirty-six years pastor of the Congregational Church, Winchcombe Street, Cheltenham. After his death he was described as 'an active and leading spirit among Congregationalists through the country'. See: 'A Sermon preached in the Congregational Church, Winchcomhe Street, Cheltenham, Sunday Evening, July 27, 1879. On the occasion of the lamented Death of the Rev. Andrew Morton Brown, LL.D. For more than thirty-six years the beloved Pastor of the Church meeting there, by Rev. Joshua C. Harrison'. 4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. In a small hand. A good letter, full of content. After explaining that the delayed reply is due to his 'many duties', he informs Walker that he is much missed: 'Your successors are, doubtless, good men but not apparently like-minded. Mr. Wheeler meets with us Mr. Monkhouse does not. In fact the latter has not yet returned my call though he has been here now for months.' He is pleased that Walker's son has entered his 'old "alma mater"', Glasgow University: 'Many a happy hardworking day I had in connexion with the Old University, racing of a cold winter's morning with my red cloak flying in the wind, (for I lived no the Gorbals' side of the Clyde) to be in time for the ½ past 7 class, & what changes I have seen since then!' He laments the loss of his parents, adding 'I had nearly written down a whole list of the "gone before" - but you being in Scotland and in Glasgow is the link of overpowering association'. The following paragraph mainly relates to Hamilton McGill ('a noble fellow'), and ends 'I hope you will find Dr. John Macfarlane and Mr. Jeffrey men who will welcome you to "the land o'cakes."'. He now turns to news of Cheltenham, beginning: 'Things here move very much as when you were with us. We meet monthly Mr Foster has left for London the workhouse services are maintained and the Afternoon services also.' There are references to 'Mr. Bond', 'Mr. Walker', 'Mr. Monkhouse', 'our Wesleyan Brothers here', a 'week of services', 'the Sunday School' and the 'Infant Day School'. In the last paragraph he gives family news, adding 'Cheltenham has never been known to have been so tried with disease of one sort and another as this Autumn especially have the children suffered'. There is a warm final paragraph.
