Les trois étapes de la pensée y sont l'idée (la conception), le jugement (qui correspond à la proposition) et le raisonnement. L'innovation la plus importante est peut-être la distinction entre la compréhension et l'extension de l'idée, qui permet de concevoir leur variation inversement proportionnelle. Jusqu'à une date récente, les historiens de la logique moderne étaient très sévères envers ce texte dont l'influence fut considérable sur les philosophes, de Locke à Kant. Ils lui reprochaient d'avoir introduit le point de vue intentionnel et d'avoir refusé toute formalisation. On a réussi récemment à donner des modèles algébriques des théories qu'il expose, et certains auteurs considèrent qu'il est une étape dans l'algébrisation de la logique. Son intérêt réside aussi dans son rapport à l'analyse du langage naturel (distinction des incidentes explicatives et déterminatives, notamment) et dans le fait que ses remaniements tiennent, pour une part, à la nécessité de donner, dans l'optique de Port-Royal, une analyse logique de certaines propositions religieuses, touchant notamment à la transsubstantiation"(1). Aunque no encontramos que se haya señalado entre bibliógrafos, esta buscadísima primera edición de la lógica de Port Royal se publicó con tres portadas diferentes. Tal como se recoge tras el resumen del privilegio en la página final, los derechos facultados a Mr. Le Bon (en realidad, Pierre Nicole), fueron cedidos 'solo para la primera edición', a los libreros Jean Guignard, Charles Savreux, Jean de Launay y Guillaume Desprez. Impreso el cuerpo de la obra, se hicieron tres portadas diferentes: una a los nombres de Guignart, Savrevx y Launay (esta que ofrecemos), otra a nombre solo de Savreux y otra a nombre solo de Launay. Desde nuestro punto de vista, la intuición concedería que la primera emisión sería la aparecida con los tres nombres y que sería su éxito lo que hizo que dos de ellos quisieran contar con ejemplares donde solo figurase su nombre. No tendría sentido el camino inverso. Por otra parte, Pierre Clair y François Girbal, en su edición crítica de esta Lógica(3), sugirieron, por los ejemplares que manejaron, que entre esos estados se da la diferencia de que, en el de Launay, el privilegio se imprimió por delante de las erratas. Sin embargo, esta es una anomalía que se extiende a más ejemplares, con indiferencia de cuál sea su portada. También está presente, por ejemplo, en el ejemplar con portada de los tres libreros existente en la Bristish Library. Una anomalía semejante, presente indistintamente en copias con una portada u otra, solo podría tener dos orígenes. Que se tratara de ejemplares en los que se habría dado una encuadernación errónea de una página desprendida, o que existan dos estados del cuerpo del texto. Y el caso es que, si se comparan ejemplares con el privilegio antes o después de las erratas, puede observarse por pequeños detalles que el cuaderno de signatura V fue compuesto e impreso, todo él, en dos ocasiones. Quizás la más evidente sea, junto a la ubicación de las erratas, la diferencia en las líneas 16 a 18 de la página 458 (sign. Vi, verso).
