Tal vez por su cercanía a los poetas hispanoamericanos (fue amigo personal de Paz, con quien trabajó el volumen New Poetry of Mexico , 1970), a sus lecturas de Borges y Alberti (a quienes ha dedicado ensayos y traducciones), o a sus viajes a Lima (donde nació el proyecto de 18 Poems from the Quechua ) y a Río de Janeiro (donde conoció la obra de Drummond de Andrade, a quien tradujo en colaboración con Thomas Colchie), la poesía de Strand tiene detrás del idioma y de su idiosincrasia norteamericanos cierto «aire de familia» que le permite ingresar en nuestra sensibilidad sin necesidad alguna de llamar a la puerta. Esta amplitud de intereses que va de la mano con su curiosidad intelectual lo sitúa en un lugar de excepción en la tradición poética norteamericana. Equidistante del meditado pictorialismo de Stevens (a quien admira) y del desgarramiento confesional de Ginsberg, la poesía de Strand se encuentra atravesada por una mirada oscura (de hecho, uno de sus libros más inquietantes se titula Darker ) que a fuerza de ennegrecer lo mirado le devuelve un inesperado brillo, una luminosidad que presenta las cosas más cotidianas como si fueran vistas por primera vez. No se trata de una mirada total que saquea el mundo en beneficio propio, sino de una mirada sesgada y humilde (la mirada del búho) cuya llave abre la puerta de aquellos mapas negros donde nos invita a entrar, siempre a solas. Mark Strand nació en 1934 en Summerside, Isla del Príncipe Eduardo, en la costa Atlántica del Canadá. Se educó y crió en los Estados Unidos y en diversos países sudamericanos. Ha publicado diez libros de poemas: Sleeping with One Eye Open (1964), Reasons for Moving (1968), Darker (1970), The Story of Our Lives (1973), The Late Hour (1978), Selected Poems (1980), The Continuous Life (1990), Dark Harbor (1993), Blizzard of One (1998) y un curioso libro de variaciones sobre una palabra llamado Chicken, Shadow, Moon & More (2000). En prosa ha publicado The Weather of Words (2000), Mr. And Mrs. Baby (1985) y The Monument (1978), además de antologías, traducciones, libros de arte y cuentos para niños. En 1990 el Congreso de los Estados Unidos lo nombró «Poeta Laureado». En 1999 le fue concedido el Premio Pulitzer por su libro Blizzard of One . Actualmente trabaja como profesor en el Committee for Social Thought de la Universidad de Chicago.
