Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Faris, Lillie A. New Testament Stories: Retold for Children. Illustrated by Arthur O. Scott. New York: The Platt & Munk Co., Inc., 1936. Hardcover, 124 pp. Color and b/w plates. A warmly illustrated 1936 Platt & Munk children's Bible reader, New Testament Stories retells more than forty Gospel narratives in clear, devotional language designed for young readers. Lillie A. Faris, author of the well-known Standard Bible Story Readers, offers a tender introduction to the life and teachings of Jesus, accompanied by detailed black-and-white drawings and six full-color plates by Arthur O. Scott. The illustrated endpapers depicting Christ as the Good Shepherd create a visually cohesive and appealing presentation. Edition/Printing: Copyright page states only MCMXXXVI (1936) with no later printings or number lines, consistent with Platt & Munk first/early printing practices. Condition: Very Good. Clean and solid example with bright purple cloth boards showing mild edge rubbing and light mottling to rear board. Front cover illustration remains vivid with a small lower-corner rub. Binding strong and hinges intact. Pages gently toned but clean, with all six color plates present and vibrant. Front endpaper bears a neatly written gift inscription dated Christmas 1940, adding appealing period provenance. Minor pencil marks to rear endpaper scene; no loose pages or major defects. A well-preserved and complete vintage children's Bible storybook, increasingly difficult to find in attractive condition with all plates intact. Lillie A. Faris (1878-1952) was an influential author of early 20th-century children's religious literature. Best known for the Standard Bible Story Readers, she specialized in accessible, faithful retellings of biblical narratives for use in homes, churches, and Sunday schools. Her collaboration with Platt & Munk brought high-quality illustrated Bible stories to generations of young readers, helping shape Christian education in the mid-century United States. Arthur O.
