In 1870 he purchased two lots on the corner of Main Street and Bannatyne Ave., where Ashdown's maintained a retail store for over 100 years. He developed and operated both successful retail and wholesale operations throughout Western Canada and, in 1907, was elected Mayor of Winnipeg.
