Coleman and Elin K. Jorgensen. ATTRIBUTED TO: Nicholas Saboly, 17th Century. SEASONAL ASSOCIATION: Christmas. SYNOPSIS: The children of Provence, France, like children everywhere, look forward to Christmas with great excitement. The young members of each family set up the Christmas crèche in the home and place little figures of the Nativity scene called santons, around the crib. But the highpoint of the festive season is the Christmas Eve ceremony of the "Adoration of the Shepherd". Then the villagers join in a torchlight procession that leads to church and a tableau of the Nativity. The scene may be a grouping of beautifully sculptured or fabric-dressed figures; often, the people themselves act the parts. This lovely seventeenth-century carol is part of the rich store of Christmas customs belonging to the people of Provence. Adrienne Adams' pictorial interpretation glows with warmth and sensitivity, and young readers will delight in the authentic details of her soft, luminous pictures. Words and music appear together, so that reading or singing or simply looking, in these pages children will discover the joy of Noel in Provence - as it was celebrated three hundred years ago and as it still is celebrated today. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Adrienne Adams (illustrator). Ex-Library.
