Su richiesta del re Antigono Gonata il poeta Arato di Soli in Cilicia (III se a.C.), basandosi sui Fenomeni di Eudosso di Cnido (IV sec. a. C.), aveva composto in versi una descrizione del cielo, che divenne famosa. Un secolo più tardi l'astronomo Ipparco di Nicea (ca. 150 a.C.) dinanzi al successo di questo poema, che ai suoi occhi rischiava di diffondere false nozioni, ne denunciava gli errori nel Commento ai Fenomeni di Eudosso e di Arato. Alla critica dei predecessori Ipparco aggiunse una tavola delle levate e dei tramonti simultanei di tutte le costellazioni visibili alla latitudine di Rodi (36° N), dove poté fare le sue osservazioni fra il 161 e il 126 a.C. Egli compilò tra l'altro un catalogo di 850 stelle, che venne utilizzato da Tolemeo; a lui si deve anche la scoperta della precessione degli equinozi. Di una considerevole attività scientifica resta solo il Commento, grazie al quale si può apprezzare il suo grande ingegno; da qui il grande interesse di pubblicarne una traduzione.
