Handwritten letter initialled 'E & K' [Eric & Kate] loosely inserted written on headed and illustrated notepaper from Dove Cottage 26 Wordsworth Walk Hampstead Garden Suburb London NW11 6AU dated 18/10/96 and consisting of about 90 words in which he encloses the book and 'a fly leaf for fun' [also present]. He says the book has been published by Adrian Bell a small publishing company in Norwich. There will be publicity in Norfolk and it will be sold at Jarrolds, 'but whether it ever escapes the beet fields is another matter.' Handwritten letter initialled 'E & K' [Eric & Kate] loosely inserted written on identical notepaper and addressed as above dated 23/1/97 and consisting of about 87 words in which he says he has been interviewed for H & H [Ham & Highgate Express] by Ruth Gorb. 'The article is generous & gets the spirit of it & me. The photo was less than flattering so a cover up job has been cleverly carried out!' Handwritten signed letter from Eric Austen to 'Country Cousin' [Joan Stevens] loosely inserted addressed from Dove Cottage etc. dated 6-12-94 and consisting of about 375 words about his health and the copies he has 'run off of a Country Child'. He encloses a copy of a letter from Whittet Books Limited rejecting the book 'I'm not bothered really. I wrote it for love & enjoyed doing it.' He asks for a few criticisms and says 'my main aim was honesty, no embroidery of facts or made up conversations - (as in Cider with Rosie) it has authenticity - at least etc .' Typescript (photostat) of 'Three Hundred from the Life Books' dated 1994. No. 16 of 20 (see accompanying letter). A4. pp. [26]., recto only. Handwritten signed letter from Eric (& Kate) to Joan Stevens loosely inserted written on headed notepaper from Dove Cottage etc, undated in which he says 'Herewith the 300 - The ultimate gift which only about 20 people in the world will get on the end of as I only photostatted 20. Limited edition, No. 199 of 300 copies. 8vo. pp. [136]. Paperback. Signed by the author. Presentation copy: 'For Joan Ð Christmas reading with love from Eric & Kate.' Two handwritten signed letters from Eric Austen to Joan Stevens loosely inserted written on headed notepaper on one side from 14 Highgate Avenue London N6 5SB dated 21 August 90 and 11 Sept 90 concerning the 40 'Life Books' Exhibition held at Friends House 6th-18th Sept 90, these are accompanied by two guides to the exhibition. A newspaper article about Austen who was responsible for creating the ceramic CND symbol loosely inserted. Also enclosed three Christmas cards, a change of address card and a handwritten signed thank you card from Kate Austen, and photocopies of newspaper articles. Eric Austen (1922 Ð 1999) was a designer and teacher who became Senior Lecturer at Goldsmiths. His 1981 exhibition of 40 giant 'Life Books' which held more than 2000 quotations taken from literature and philosophy was revived in 1990 at Friends House in London. Joan Stevens the feminist bookseller and expert on John Cowper Powys and Edward Thomas died in 2015. Very good. 1874739072 Very good. Signedes.
