Austin Poet Aline Michaelis had drawn attention to the poets in our city when she was selected as reigning 1934 Poet Laureate of Texas, the third person appointed to that post and the first woman to be so honored. In March 1949, fifty years ago, 19 Poets officially organized Austin Poetry Society, electing University of Texas Professor of English Dr. Robert Agar Law as President. Today ? 1999 ? Austin Poetry Society still holds strong, with 70 active members who meet monthly to present their poems, hear guest speakers, conduct monthly cash-awarded contests, and publish a newsletter with a worksheet containing a critic judges' selections of poems, which are read at the meetings for a Popular Vote.
