I wrote to them to say that I found him too small for the Victoria. This & his taking too much interest in the subterranian openings alone prevented me from keeping him at once for a hack as his paces & temper seemed to me perfect.' He sends his compliments to Bristow's family, 'if they should still recollect me - and the terrible ascent on the "Monks cap" - never to be attempted again by me -'.

A long letter, addressed to an unnamed English recipient (perhaps the editor of an literary journal) interested in news of Austrian literary culture. The letter contains references to: 'the polyglott Georgian', 'the new litterary [sic] gazette', 'Mr. Mitchel member of the asiatic society', 'the new pocketbook intitled [sic] Vista', the second edition of Baron Zedlitz's 'Todtenkranze', the 'Annals of litterature [sic] of Vienna', new plays, and meetings of Viennese learned societies. He concludes by stating that he has aimed to 'comply with Your wishes of litterary [sic] correspondency, as far as he good opportunity of a traveller allows: I answer for this all being written in the sense of my desire mit Wahrheit und Liebe if not with love for , whom no good Austrian, no man of letters has reason to love, but with love for litterature [sic] and my country. Refrain in Your answer from all reflections on the content of this letter, and acknowledge only the letter received by Mr Mitchel from Yours | most truly | Joseph von Hammer'.

A detailed memoir on Austrian trading possibilities with the Near and Middle East based on a lengthy investigative journey made by the author during the late 1830s. Reinelt states that he wanted to find out which Austrian manufactured goods were marketable in the Levant, how existing trade could be boosted, and what kind of articles in use in Europe could be specially made up to be promoted for sale in the Orient. He discusses existing Turkish trade concessions to France and Britain and Turkish imports. 21 statistical tables give details of Turkish imports and duties levied on raw materials (cotton, wool, silks, leather, furs, iron, steel, copper, zinc, woods, food & drink, spices etc.) and on manufactured goods (linen, caps, hats, boots, shoes, stockings, thread, buttons, brushes, combs, umbrellas, paper, glass, guns, jewelry, furniture, chemicals). Chapter 6 (pp108-122) treats life and commercial conditions in Constantinople; chapter 7 on Trebizond includes a statistical table of both imports and exports; chapter 8 deals with Tabriz, capital of the Persian province of Azerbeijan, chapter 9 (pp140- 55) is devoted to the western Anatolian port of Smyrna with 8 pages of statistical tables of imports and exports from 1835 to 1838 calculated in Turkish piasters (pp154-178 comprise tables of Smyrna trade with Malta, Triest, America, Britain, France, Holland, Belgium, Livorno, Genoa and Venice); chapters 10 and 11 respectively deal with the trade of the Greek island of Syros, and of the city of Athens; chapter 12 contains statistical tables of the principal exports and duties from all Turkish provinces.
