Excellent mongraph on string figures, or, variants of the "cat's cradles". 102 string figures and 10 string tricks practiced by the Kwakiutil Indians of North America. This extraordinary collection, with lucid instructions, was assembled by Russian scholar Julia Averkieva (1907 - 1980) of the Soviet Academy of Sciences while accompanying anthropologist Franz Boas on his 1930 expedition to Vancouver Island. Averkieva left her field notes with the American Museum of Natural History on return to Russia. Mark Sherman edited and expanded the manuscript for this volume, and tested each figure for workability.
