Come scrive Ivan Bunin, la storia d'amore tra Lidija A. Avilova e Anton P. Cechov era un grande segreto, che i due mantennero per decenni. Eppure, "Cechov nella mia vita" è più del racconto personale di una relazione intima. Al di là di qualsiasi polemica, personale (come quella di Marija Cechova, legittima moglie dello scrittore) o accademica (diversi ricercatori hanno espresso più di un dubbio a riguardo), queste memorie illuminano alcuni degli aspetti più intimi di Cechov e soprattutto permettono al lettore di sbirciare sul suo lavoro di guida letteraria nei confronti della giovane (e ambiziosa, e infelicemente sposata) collega. Il risultato è il più classico romanzo sentimentale russo, con tutto l'armamentario che conosciamo e amiamo: i bigliettini mandati attraverso la servitù, le vetture di piazza, i balli in maschera, i fiumi di tè, gli struggimenti.
