The concern of its first editors, Sidney Norton and Iain Murray, was not to establish a new Christian magazine at that time; rather what they sought was a recovery of those truths that declared salvation to be a work of divine grace. To secure that end, the magazine unashamedly promoted an older form of Christian literature, the kind of which was not widely available in 1950s Britain. And so, from the pages of this outwardly unattractive magazine, the voices of long dead and forgotten Reformers and Puritans sounded once again. - Banner of Truth.

August 1662, am St. Bartholomew`s Day, geschrieben, als zweitausend Pastoren ihre Kirche aus Gewissensgründen verlassen mussten. Aber nichts ist bedeutender, als diese Verbannten selber zu Wort kommen zu lass…en. Die Umstände von 1662 sind insofern auch für die heutige Zeit relevant, in der die Betonung wieder einmal auf Gleichförmigkeit und angebliche Einheit gelegt wird - auf Kosten der Wahrheit und Heiligkeit. Möge dieses Buch eine Ermutigung für die Prediger der Wahrheit des Evangeliums und ihre Integrität sein. Dieser Tag stellte einen großen Wendepunkt in der englischen christlichen Geschichte dar. Es war für die Pastoren ein besonderer Tag, an dem ihr Gehalt und die Mieten fällig wurden. Für den Fall, dass jemand sich nicht anpassen wollte, bekam er keinen Lohn und wurde kurzerhand aus dem Pfarrhaus geworfen - oftmals in die völlige Armut. Sie wurden zum Schweigen gebracht, indem sie per Gesetz nicht mehr predigen oder lehren durften. Sie wurden von allen Ämtern in Kirche und Staat ausgeschlossen und durften weder Versammlungen abhalten noch in kleinen Gruppen in ihren Häusern zusammenkommen. Das Strafgesetzbuch wurde gegen diese 'Abweichler' (Nonkonformisten) oftmals mit unnötiger Brutalität und Härte angewandt. Sie wurden bespitzelt, vor Gericht gezerrt, verurteilt und ins Arbeitslager auf Plantagen in Virginia gebracht. Diese Abschiedspredigten vom Farewell Sunday im August 1662 sind eine gute Einführung in puritanische Theologie.
