Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This contributed volume highlights cutting-edge breeding techniques in legumes, specifically targeting drought tolerance. It examines the challenges faced and explores future perspectives for achieving sustainable legume production. The dual challenges of a rapidly growing global population and climate change impose immense pressure on agricultural systems to meet current and future food demands. Climate change significantly threatens agriculture, causing substantial yield losses due to biotic and abiotic stresses, with drought being one of the most severe environmental factors impacting plant productivity. Water, which constitutes approximately 80-95% of the fresh biomass of plants, is vital for various physiological processes, including plant growth, development, and metabolism.Legumes, second only to cereals in global food production, account for 27% of world primary crop production and fulfill 33% of protein requirements. Cultivated across diverse climates and soil types, legumes contribute to over 35% of global vegetable oil production. However, drought remains a major yield-limiting factor in grain legumes, a challenge expected to intensify in the future. Drought adversely affects legumes at all growth stages, disrupting germination (through malfunctioning enzymes like proteases and amylases), nutrient uptake (due to reduced water use efficiency), growth (by inhibiting cell division and leaf expansion), and yield formation (by restricting photosynthesis).Given these challenges, the scientific community is focusing on developing drought-resistant legume cultivars to ensure future food security. This volume consolidates research efforts on advancing drought-tolerant legumes using marker-assisted breeding techniques. This book will serve as a valuable resource for students, researchers, and breeding professionals engaged in legume breeding for drought tolerance. By fostering advancements in sustainable agriculture, this volume aims to contribute to global food security and empower stakeholders in addressing climate change-induced.…

Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. The Special Issue "Effect of Biotic and Abiotic Factors on the Physiology of Horticultural Plants" presents recent advances in our understanding of how horticultural species respond to increasingly complex environmental challenges. Horticultural crops, including vegetables, fruits, ornamentals, and medicinal or aromatic plants, are characterized by high economic value and intensive cultivation practices, but also by heightened sensitivity to environmental fluctuations. The contributions to this Special Issue address a wide spectrum of biotic and abiotic stresses, such as salinity, drought, temperature fluctuations, and plant-pathogen interactions, with a strong emphasis on physiological, biochemical, and molecular responses. Particular attention is given to oxidative stress regulation, photosynthetic performance, and the role of signaling networks, including phytohormones and reactive oxygen species. In addition, several studies explore innovative mitigation strategies, such as the application of biostimulants, optimization of environmental parameters in soilless systems, and the exploitation of genetic variability among cultivars and landraces. Overall, this collection provides a comprehensive overview of current research trends, offering valuable knowledge to support the development of resilient horticultural systems in a changing environment. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Light is an essential factor for the growth and quality of horticultural plants and its effects depend upon parameters such as duration, intensity and quality. It is an energy source for photosynthesis as well as a signal triggering plant photomorphogenesis and physiological, biochemical and molecular responses. However, solar light strongly differs between winter and summer conditions, with excess light in open field cultivations imposing severe stress on plants, especially during summer months, while supplementary light sources are implemented in greenhouse crop production to complement natural light when it is insufficient. On the other hand, artificial lighting is used as the sole lighting source in plant factories and nurseries (i.e., healing chambers, plant tissue culture). In order to enhance sustainability and profitability, light must be studied and efficiently applied within horticultural crop production. Novel technologies such as light-emitting diodes, new transparent greenhouse covering materials, photoselective nettings, growth chambers and plant factories showcase the critical role of light interacting with plants from the level of seed germination to growth rate, product quality and postharvest storage. This Special Issue focuses on recent findings in horticultural crops with regard to light characteristics (i.e., quality, quantity etc.) presented as research papers, short communications and review articles.…
