Buch
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. In Latin. Volume I: marbled boards with white leather spine and corners. Small white spots of scuffing. Small chips on both labels. Gilt decorations on the spine. Surface rubbing on the two bottom corners. Indent on the rear middle edge with tiny closed tear. Thin crease off the front top edge. Tiny bit of crinkling at the spine ends. Little puncture on the front side of the spine (doesn't go through to the other side). The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and covers as well. No binding issues. The interior the book is in very nice condition. The pages are very clean. Only a light bit of amber foxing. Some crinkling here and there. Only light creasing at some bottom corners. One tiny loss at a bottom corner. Also a loss off the top corner of two consecutive pages. None reaching near the print. There are no markings in the volume. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. There is a large fold-out map (Gallia ulterior vel transalpina sive galliae ad cail julii caesaris commentarios accommodatae) at the start of the numbered pages. It is in very good condition with just one very small edge tear. There is a one- page illustration between pages 94 and 95. And there is a smaller fold-out map (Alesia Mandubiorum Oppidum A Cesare Obsesa) toward the end of the book. All are in very good condition. Volume II: loss on the title label and missing the label below with the number of the volume. Several small white scuffs on the front, none on the rear. The white (or beige) leather on all three volumes is in very good shape. The gilt lettering on the spine of Volume II is in good shape. The two bottom edges have a light bit of superficial rubbing. There is a tiny puncture on the rear side of the spine. It does not go through to the other side. Like with Volume I, the binding is very solid. The pages are nicely, tightly bound from cover to cover. The covers are similarly nicely, tightly bound. The pages are in similar condition to the last. Only the lightest bit of amber foxing. Only an occasional corner crease (I didn't find any placeholder creases in any of the volumes). Some light crinkling here and there. Three pages with a very small loss off an edge, none coming anywhere near the print. Volume II does have a water stain on the blank two rear end papers and on the last 10 pages of print (20 sides). The stain is light and doesn't impair one's ability to read, also entirely disappears. There are no markings in this volume. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. Volume III: the marbled boards have very little scuffing. There is a small stain off the top edge of the spine. The labels on the spine are intact, just a little scuffing/scratching. The gilt lettering looks good. There is a bump at the front middle edge which has created a thin scuff on the front cover. There is a little superficial rubbing on the bottom edges. This volume is also very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. No binding issues with any of the volumes. All are also square with pretty straight spines. Again only very light amber foxing where it appears. Very clean pages. Very little creasing. A light bit of crinkling. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any losses in this volume. I'm not seeing any tears. I meant to reference two thin tears in one of the other volumes, neither reaching the print. There are no markings here. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. The Index Alphabeticus begins at page 227 and runs through page 280. That is followed by a fold-out map which is in very good condition and ends the third volume. All three volumes have a green ribbon.

Contemporary paneled pigskin, brass clasps to fore-edges, raised bands, faint early hand-lettered title to spine, edges colored green. Light soiling and a few small faint spots and stains to boards, light rubbing to extremities, light wear to raised bands, spine ends and corners, small faint dampstains to head of text block, front hinge starting, a few small wormholes to rear pastedowns, early manuscript index to endleaves. Moderate toning to interior, occasional light foxing. A nice copy of a rare title. $1,500. * Only edition, one of two issues, the other issued the same year as a folio. Submitted as an academic thesis, this work is a detailed commentary on the sections on matrimonial law in Book IV of the Decretals of Gregory IX, one of the four works known collectively as the Corpus Juris Canonici. Among the topics discussed are marriage contracts, child marriage, bigamy, consanguinity and reasons for annulment, such as non-consummation. Unlike the typical thesis of the era, which is brief and confined to a single, well-defined topic, this work is broad and comprehensive.
