Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. Jean-Michel Basquiat: Made on Market Street chronicles Jean-Michel Basquiats time spent living in Los Angelesa city that indelibly influenced his work. Featuring almost thirty artworks, an interview with Basquiats friends and family, an essay by Fred Hoffman, and a selection of archival material, this catalogue captures a time of profound creative growth for the artist.Jean-Michel Basquiat: Made on Market Street is the first exhibition catalogue exclusively devoted to the work Basquiat created in Los Angeles. The exhibition, curated by art historian and publisher, Fred Hoffman, includes almost thirty works made between 1982 and 1984. It centers upon three exhibitions the famed Neo-Expressionist held at Larry Gagosian Gallery in Los Angeles in 1982, 1983, and 1986.A conversation between Larry Gagosian, filmmaker, Tamra Davis, Hoffman, and the artists sisters, Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, considers the revival of the LA music scene in the 1980s, Basquiats experimentation with editioned works, and the artists struggle to gain acceptance from traditional art institutions. Hoffman hones in on several of Basquiats works made in LA in a 5-part essay, recounting the artists use of new materials pulled from his immediate environment and invocation of something psycho-spirituala liberation from the confines of ones worldly experience. Fusing anecdotes from his time in Basquiats studio with formal analysis, Hoffman unpacks the complex and varied symbolism that permeated the artists oeuvre. An extensive selection of documentary material, ephemera, and never-before-published photographs provide a highly personal view of the storied artist. Basquiat, Lisane. JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT: Made on Market Street. 172 pages. Folio, boards. New York, Gagosian Gallery, 2024. This book was published on the occasion of Jean-Michel Basquiat: Made on Market Street at Gagosian, Beverly Hills, the first-ever exhibition focused exclusively on works that the artist produced in Los Angeles. Basquiat frequented Southern California from November 1982 through May 1984, working in Venice to develop approximately a hundred paintings, numerous works on paper, and six silkscreen editions. Curated by Fred Hoffman with Larry Gagosian, Made on Market Street revisits this pivotal era, bringing nearly thirty works together, including some of his most important paintings. The catalogue reproduces the exhibited works together with archival material, including installation images from the 1982 and 1983 exhibitions at Larry Gagosian Gallery, historical ephemera, and exhibition reviews, as well as previously unpublished photographs of Basquiat in his studio. It features a conversation between Larry Gagosian, Fred Hoffman, filmmaker Tamra Davis, and the artist's sisters, Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, along with an essay in which Hoffman reflects on the works that Basquiat made in Los Angeles, discussing the complex symbolism and restless innovation that permeated his oeuvre.
